Seiko 7A38 - by the numbers

This poor example of what once was a brown-coated 7A38-6020, now with most of bezel stripped bare and fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet was listed yesterday evening by a German eBay seller as a 10-day auction, with an opening bid price of 1 Euro. This another case of Double Déjà Vu. The same 7A38-6020 has featured twice before on page 6 of this thread. See details below.

SEIKO Quarz Chronograph (7A38)

Bei dieser Uhr handelt es sich um einen der ersten Quarz Chronographen mit analoger Anzeige überhaupt. Das verbaute Kaliber, das 1983 herausgebrachte 7A38, ist im Gegensatz zu den meisten heutigen Werken noch sehr Robust und Wartungsfreundlich ausgelegt und die Totalisatoren werden von unabhängigen Schrittmotoren betrieben.

Das Ziffernblatt ist sehr aufgeräumt, die Totalisatoren zeigen die klassische Anordnung und die Tages- und Datumsanzeige sind in den rechten 1/10 Sekundenzähler integriert.

Die Uhr zeigt altersbedingte Gebrauchsspuren, die Flanken der Lünette ist stark abgewetzt, das Gehäuse ist in besseren Zustand und das Glas ist makellos. Alle Funktionen sind uneingeschränkt funktionsfähig. Das Armband ist für einen Handgelenkumfang von ca. 19 cm eingestellt, lässt sich aber auf bis zu 20 cm ausweiten. Es ist etwas verkratzt, und es fehlt der Bügel der Sicherheitsfaltschließe, trotzedem schlißt sie gut und läßt sich so tragen.

It first appeared in March 2018, listed by Venezuelan eBay seller salesxioxs, as a 5-day auction, with a laughably optimistic opening bid price of $250. It really is worth flicking back to check that seller's photos - particularly the one of the rust ravaged movement. The seller re-listed it a few times, gradually reducing the opening bid price, until it finally sold in April 2018 for the reduced opening bid price of $159.

It was purchased by the Italian eBay seller pichimmi, who appears to have made some attempt at polishing up the badly scratched ill-fitting bracelet and fitted a replacement crystal. In November 2018, he listed it as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 100 Euros. It sold for 151 Euros, evidently purchased by the current German eBay seller wolverine-359.

Meanwhile, greedy would-be profiteering Italian eBay re-seller simone00simone continues to play games with his re-listings for his grossly over-priced brown-coated 7A38-6020. Despite there being the option to make an offer on his last re-listing - and it receiving over 300 views in the last two weeks or so, he didn't receive one single offer. So earlier this morning he ended that listing.

True to form, it was back on eBay again, re-listed less than a minute later. This time he's shuffled the order of his photos, reverting to his original primary image. He has reduced the 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price from 750 Euros to 'only' 700 Euros, but removed the option to make an offer.

Apart from the small reduction in price, he still hasn't corrected the deliberate 'error' (complete and utter falsehood) from that of his original description:

I think it was purchased and then placed in a drawer and almost never worn.

Yeah right. That's why the once orange bezel inlay numbering and dial printing are so badly faded.

The 10-day German eBay auction for that well-worn example of a brown-coated 7A38-6020, fitted with a non-original generic stainless bracelet, ended a few moments ago, selling for 179.88 Euros after 29 bids.

Funnily enough, only this morning, I'd looked at Simone's latest re-listing for his still grossly over-priced brown coated 7A38-6020. Earlier this afternoon he ended that re-listing, once again, presumably because of an error in the pricing. He re-listed it almost immediately with the Buy-it-Now price further reduced to 'only' 580 Euros.

This well worn brown-coated 7A38-6020 was listed earlier today, by an Italian eBay seller as a 1-day auction with an opening bid price of 150 Euros. It's been fitted with the wrong sub-dial hands and a replacement movement, with the wrong colour day / date wheels, both of which immediately struck a chord.

This well-worn and somewhat non-original brown coated 7A38-6020 was listed this morning, by an Italian eBay seller, as a 7-day auction, with a risibly over-optimistic opening bid price of 400 Euros. The seller claims not to know anything about the watch's service history, but it's obviously been fitted with a replacement movement at some point. The day / date wheels are silver / white, with black lettering, whereas of course, this model should have black background day / date wheels with white lettering. The original and unique 'tuning fork' style sub-dial hands were presumably damaged during the movement swap, because they've been replaced with plain yellowy orange stick hands off another 7Axx.

Uncharacteristically, I seem to have fallen down on the job, in failing to record a selling price for that one. I do know that it was re-listed 3 times, for 7 days at a time, at the same laughable 400 Euro asking price. Whether it may have sold later, off eBay, to the current Italian seller - your guess is as good as mine.

Besides, even with that latest reduction of 30 Euros :roll: Simone's 550 Euros greedy Buy-it-Now price is still more than double what he paid for it, even adding on the 9% Catawiki buyer's premium that he'd have paid on the 222 Euros winning bid.

A couple of status updates on the two brown-coated 7A38-6020's listed by Italian eBay sellers. (I'd deliberately delayed posting about them for a couple of days).

The would-be seller of that well-worn example fitted with non-original replacement sub-dial hands had re-listed it three times, on a daily basis, latterly reducing the opening bid price slightly to 140 Euros. Still no bids were forthcoming. The most recent re-listing ended on Saturday evening, still unsold. He hasn't re-listed it since.

I've lost count of the number of times that greedy would-be profiteering re-seller simone00simone had ended his re-listings for his ex-Catawiki 7A38-6020, as allegedly being no longer available. :roll:

On Sunday morning, he'd revised the latest re-listing yet again, further reducing his 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price to 'only' 500 Euros.

On Sunday evening, he ended that latest re-listing in his usual deceitful manner.

Not only that, but around the same time, late on Sunday evening, he also ended his other two most re-listings for over-priced Seiko 7A38's. But since then (early Monday morning), he's re-listed another watch. So your guess as to what may have become of them, or what he's up to, is as good as mine.

I just happened to look at the above re-listing again this afternoon and noticed that Simone's feedback had mysteriously dropped from 199 to 198 since I'd made my previous post this morning. Seems he's picked up a negative for his troubles.

If you can't read the small print (and in case he manages to get it revised), it reads:
bought watch for 200 euros and tries to sell it for 1000 euros a few days later.

The disgruntled eBayer who left him the negative, with a current feedback rating of 5641 is obviously the same person who made an offer on the previous listing, was declined and then hit the Buy-it-Now button. Presumably Buyer's Remorse and / or common sense kicked in afterwards. Or 'Pot calling the kettle black' perhaps ?

Once I'd had my first cup of coffee and fired up my PC, one of the first things I checked was to see whether the negative feedback left for Simone had been removed or amended. Seems the disgruntled buyer is not going to back down. Earlier this morning (an hour ago @ 06:43), he added a follow up:

In case you can't read the small print, it reads:
I cancelled purchase as I noticed this is not NOS as described scratches & grime
(Simone never actually described it as 'NOS' at any point, just 'almost never worn'.)

With apologies for the double quote from the previous page, but hopefully this will be the very last post on the subject of this particular brown-coated 7A38-6020.

It took me far longer than it should have, to figure out the identity of the disgruntled eBayer who left Simone that negative feedback (which was removed by eBay later the same day). But in my defence, up until last week, I was missing a couple of significant bits of evidence. Turns out it was an Australian eBay seller f1models - and that it was, in hindsight, very much a case of 'Pot calling the kettle black'.

At the time their feedback was 5641, but if you click on the link I posted, you'll see it's increased since April to 5676. Here's how their eBay profile looked on 5th July.

To fully comprehend how I arrived at this conclusion, you'll need to have read my recent posts in two other threads (June 21st and July 2nd onwards, respectively):

Transpires that eBay account f1models belongs to a nasty piece of work named Dempsey W***** - a proverbial sewer rat. His own feedback may be a squeaky clean 100% positive, but if you wish to see a true picture of this spitefully vindictive eBayer, check out his feedback left for others, particularly between pages 25-31. Very similar pattern to his other recently banned eBay ID .....

This is the same person who owns the now banned eBay account f1modelcars ....

and more significantly, aussiewatches (as was) latterly seiko7a38 forum

Who, of course also happens to own a rather well-worn brown-coated 7A38-6020.

If you've followed this thread - and his numerous abusive (and downright fraudulent and slanderous) eBay listings, then you'll know that he started his one-man hate campaign in mid-February. It quickly escalated, using not his own, but a succession of stolen photos of other watches, with an increasingly lengthy bold red printed diatribe as an excuse for a description. For the record, this was his last listing for a brown-coated 7A38-6020. It used the full set of lightly watermarked photos from an old eBay listing by US eBay seller thewatchcollective, dating from January 2014, which can be found towards the bottom of the first page of this thread.

It appeared early on the morning of Friday 21st June, along with half a dozen other abusive bogus listings for various 7A38's, most of which I've briefly mentioned, in passing, in updating the respective model specific threads. It was promptly deleted by eBay Trust & Safety, at the same time as they banned this ID. If you click on the above link (which, trust me, was good), as with any other links to eBay listings by aussiewatches that I've posted in this thread, or elsewhere in other topics (and also Simone's original listing for his ex-Catawiki brown-coated 7A38-6020, where Dempsey W***** left him the (deleted) negative feedback, using his alias f1models), you'll now be met with this mildly annoying eBay error message:

Here we go again. :roll: Another stupidly over-priced, obviously worn, brown-coated 7A38-6020, misrepresented as 'NOS'. Apart from the various minor chips and scratches on the bezel and watch case, note the rubbing wear, down to the black chrome plating, along the swage line on the R.H. side of the case. Oh - and there's plenty of DNA evidence showing it's been worn under the bezel thumbgrips. Listed earlier this evening by a Spanish eBay business seller, with a risible 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of 1500 Euros !!

Here's their eBay profile banner, implying that they're a legitimate B&M business:

Perhaps they should consider a name change to Wanton & Wilier.
