This well-worn 7A38-7070, fitted with a cheap black leather strap, in place of the original B1241S stainless bracelet, was listed late this morning by a French eBay seller, with a laughable 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of 300 Euros, or the option to make a much lower more realistic offer.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143217447423

Going through my eBay watching pages, I was rather surprised to spot that the well-worn 7A38-7070, fitted with a leather strap, listed by a French eBay seller last week, had dropped down to the bottom of page 5 - already sold. So I naturally assumed, given its less than ideal condition, that it would have gone for a lot less than the seller's 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now asking price. No so it would seem. :/

A slightly unusual job lot pairing of a 7A38-7070 and 7A28-7040 came up in my saved search results yesterday afternoon. It's being listed by an Italian eBay seller, who's asking 850 Euros as a Buy-it-Now price, with the option to make an offer. It's unusual in being a 30 day listing, but was already 7 days old when it appeared. The original listing was actually created a week ago on Sunday 21st April, presumably as something else, then the seller revised just about everything to create the 'new' listing yesterday (Sunday 28th).

The 7A28-7040 looks O.K..However, the 7A38-7070 is not entirely original as the seller would have you believe: 'as they should be and with the original bracelets'.

Both watches are fitted with Seiko p/n B1075S bracelets, which is correct for the 7A28-7040, but the 7A38-7070 should come with the slightly heavier (by virtue of having slightly thicker links) Seiko p/n B1241S bracelet. Not only that, but the p/n B1075S on the 7A38-7070 has been modified by the fitment of a non-original short fold-over / snap type clasp in place of the original 7-hole adjustment SQ clasp.

SEIKO Chronograph SPORTS 100

Lot of 2 pieces: one is the 7A38-7070 and the second is the 7A28-7040

Both are in full working condition as they should be and with the original bracelets.

The auction price is for the two watches as you can see in auction pics.

Please, if you have any doubt, ask before bid.

No return for this item, please.

Shipping from Italy.

The above job lot pairing of a 7A38-7070 (fitted with the wrong / modified bracelet) and 7A28-7040 sold this afternoon, but not for the full 850 Euros Buy-it-Now price.

Note that WatchCount.com also correctly picked up the original listing's creation date of Sunday 21st April (rather than yesterday afternoon, when it actually appeared live on eBay), per my comment in my previous post.

This well-worn 7A38-7070, fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet, was listed late yesterday evening by a UK eBay seller as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of £0.99. Note the discoloured dial baton and hands lume. The non-original replacement bracelet, which the seller eludes to, is of course, none other than our old friend, the aftermarket 20mm Feiko, documented in this thread.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113732511371

The Seiko 7A28 (with the 7A38 listed here being different only by having day/date feature) was the world’s first analog quartz chronograph movement. It was a triple register chronograph capable of measuring down to 1/20th of a second with a rather unique single-handed split seconds mechanism. Boasting a full metal construction, the 7A28 instantly sets itself apart from most modern quartz movements.

The watch features fully metal gears, 15 jewels, and 4 stepper motors hidden behind rectangular plates. There is even a trimmer for the quartz regulator to adjust the rate of the watch as the quartz crystal ages. As mentioned earlier, the 7A28 functions much as you would expect any chronograph to. Hitting the pusher at 2 starts the chronograph. The 1/20th second hand whizzes about its subdial) while the central seconds hand marks out each passing second. Hitting it again stops it, and hitting the reset pusher at 4 will sweep the hands back to their original positions (unlike a mechanical or mecaquartz chronograph, which snaps to attention).

This 7A38 dates from February 1984 which makes it a first generation model. It was also I believe issued to the South African airforce.

This particular model is quite rare to find and highly sought after, especially in this condition.

The watch isn’t perfect, but really is stunning in the flesh. There is a dink in the bezel at 34, and the case/bracelet has some very faint marks. The hour and minute hands are starting to show their age.

Everything functions perfectly on the watch. I’m pretty sure that the bracelet is not original to the watch, it may even be an after market replacement, please study the photos carefully.

Please ask if you have any questions.

As with most of my auctions this will start at 99p with no reserve.

On 29-Apr-19 at 21:46:44 BST, seller added the following information:

The bracelet is fitted loosely on my approx 7inch wrist and has plenty of adjustment left on the clasp, unfortunately no spare links are present.

How can I put this tactfully ? Some people really should stick to what they're best at.

UK eBay seller skytwang has featured in these columns a number of times before, as a regular purveyor of 7A28-7120 RAF Gen 1's (and CWC G10's) to the military-minded masses. Yesterday evening, he listed a 7A38-7070, fitted with a non-original (Feiko 20mm aftermarket) replacement bracelet, that he variously describes as being in beautiful / outstanding / superb condition (it isn't any of those things and is certainly not original), with a laughable 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £485 and currently no option to make an offer. This watch is a warmed-over 'wrong un' and in case you didn't recognize it instantly (as I did), yet another case of Déjà Vu.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143249165221

This listing is for a beautiful Seiko 7A38-7070 quartz chronograph diver-style watch in outstanding condition. The watch was manufactured in February 1984.

Condition and operation

In almost all respects this watch is superb. The case is totally clean and virtually unmarked, the bezel rotates cleanly with a positive click, the bezel insert is perfect, the crystal is unmarked, the face and hands are excellent, and the case back is clean with minor surface marks. Please refer to the images to assess cosmetic condition.

All functions operate correctly. Time, time set, chronograph are all working, date and ay can be quickset from the crown (one stop out) and advance automatically at midnight. The watch is running superbly with a new Renata battery. Chrono functions all reset to zero and can be manually re-set if required (pull the crown out to the first stop and press the relevant button to reset the corresponding function, then push the crown back in).

The following work has just been carried out:

- Case stripped and ultrasonically cleaned, including the bezel ring

- Pushers removed, disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, reassembled, greased and refitted

- Movement checked

- New Renata battery fitted

- Bezel and case back gaskets greased and refitted.

The watch has an after-market strap with the original Seiko clasp.

The watch is supplied in an original period Seiko box.

Notes

I would recommend that the buyer download a copy of the 7A28/38 instruction manual from one of the several websites where this is available.

Please carefully check the photographs before buying to assess condition. The photographs form part of the description.

Note that this is a vintage watch and although the seals are in place, waterproofing/water resistance has not been tested and cannot be guaranteed. This watch is considered suitable for normal day-to-day use, but as a precautionary measure I would not recommend it for use in sports activities, swimming etc. (I know it s a diver, but all the same...)

This is a private sale and no warranties or guarantees are made beyond the described condition and the normal eBay terms and conditions. If you have any questions, please just ask!

Shipping and packing

UK postage is by Royal Mail Special Delivery, hence the cost.

Shipping to North America, Oceania and Europe by Global Shipping Programme. Buyer pays any import duties and customs fees.

Buyers from North America and Oceania please be aware that due to GSP restrictions you may find that you are unable to complete the purchase. If this applies please contact me to request shipping cost and I will quote shipping. If you wish to go ahead I will amend the listing to enable you to make the purchase. Be aware also that shipping is expensive due to the insurance, and I will only ship fully insured. Buyer pays any imports duties and customs fees.

Thanks very much for looking!

This suspect looking 7A38-7070, fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet was listed earlier this evening by a Brazilian eBay seller with a Buy-it-Now price of $300. Sounds cheap perhaps ? Still probably best avoided. Check out the not so subtle re-luming of the hour and minute hands for starters. Something less obvious (and maybe I'm wrong), but the bezel looks like it's possibly off a 7A28-7040 / -7049.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183668390942

That the watch has been 'messed with' should come as no surprise. The Brazilian eBay seller denguinho is, of course, our 'old friend' and arch watch botcher, watches.br masquerading under a new ID. The format of the multi-coloured description and frequent use of the word 'impeccable' are dead giveaways. If you want to see some of their earlier efforts, check out this thread in the eBay section.

It took some 6 weeks (and over 400 views), before someone was foolhardy enough to hit the Buy-it-Now button.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183668390942

Presumably the buyer was skytwang, but using a different eBay ID (as many eBay re-sellers do) and it was purchased with an eye to making a profit, because he's now trying to sell it for more than double the price paid. He's obviously fitted a different bracelet (the classic £10 quid 'Feiko' aftermarket last resort fall-back), which has been fitted with a re-finished Seiko 7-hole adjustment SQ clasp.

Comparing his listing photos with the Brazilian seller's, the watch appears to have benefited from a pair of replacement hour and minute hands, but they are neither of the correct styles used on a 7A38-7070. If I'm not mistaken they're the same type normally found on the 7A28-7040 / -7049 (or stainless 7A38-7020 / -7029). His photos also confirm what I'd suspected earlier - that the watch is fitted with the wrong bezel, off a 7A28-7040 / -7049, which also appears to have benefited from the fitment of a Yobokies repro' bezel insert. So all in all, pretty much a 'wrong un', to be avoided - especially at his ludicrous asking price.

I note with mild satisfaction that UK eBay re-seller skytwang has since pulled his listing for that 7A38-7070 because of an error. 'An error' ? I'd posit there were a few, besides the speculative over-pricing. :P

However, that doesn't necessarily mean it has been withdrawn from sale. There are other avenues / sales platforms besides eBay. I note that skytwang (real name Jos Finer a.k.a. sumacwatches) has also posted it on Instagram, earlier today.

This 7A38-7070, in no better than average worn condition, was listed yesterday evening, by a Canadian eBay seller, with a ludicrous 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of $1100 CAD (equivalent to $815 US), thankfully, with the option to make a much lower more sensible offer.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133054200267

Vintage Seiko 7A38 Speedmaster in incredible condition all function working except minute chrono compter (easy fix)

Split second working

Case band superb

New bezel insert

Old bezel and extra link included

Box Seiko quartz also included

Sold as is

If you look at the seller's photos (in the slightly different order that I've uploaded them), the first two show the watch (in the Seiko presentation box) still fitted with its original well-worn bezel insert. The next 4 show it fitted with a Yobokies repro' bezel insert, which evidently hasn't been pressed home properly. Last time I checked, Harold was asking $30 bucks for these.

http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/yobokies/media/?searchTerm=7A28

Then there's the non-functioning 30 minute chrono', which the seller states is an 'easy fix'. It begs the question why he hasn't bothered to fix it himself. Laziness or incompetence ? IMO, given the condition, this 7A38 deserves to sell for no more than half his asking price.

Indeed, yesterday evening, UK eBay seller skytwang re-listed his somewhat less than original 7A38-7070. In some respects, the listing is similar, in that it uses the same primary image and 7 other photos. The obvious difference is that this time he's listed it as a 7-day auction, with an opening bid price of £99 (compared to the previous 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £485 (with the option to make an offer). I haven't compared their descriptions word for word, but I did notice an additiional disclosure, subtitled: 'Non-original parts', which I've copied and pasted below.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143268701864

Non-original parts

I have been informed that the bezel and hands are likely from a similar 7A28-7040/49, and having now compared examples this looks to be the case. The bezel insert is a recent after-market replacement. The watch has a common after-market strap with an original Seiko clasp.

This 7A38-7070 in average worn condition, was listed earlier this afternoon, by an Italian eBay seller, with a Buy-it-Now price of 390 Euros, or the option to make an offer. Though I'm not sure where the 'Quotation' of 579 Euros (in the description) comes from, other than possibly being a figment of the seller's imagination.

The 7-day eBay auction by UK seller skytwang, for his somewhat less than original 7A38-7070, ended yesterday evening, selling for £239 after 15 bids - less than half his earlier 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £485. I was a little surprised that it actually made that much, having spent most of yesterday, with the bidding stalled @ £185. Checking the bidding history, both the winning bidder and one of the losing bidders, who placed 7 of those 15 bids, have 100% bidding activity with this seller. I wouldn't dare infer that this indicates shill bidding - more likely a lack of experience / due diligence on the part of those bidders.

At the risk of deliberately repeating myself ....

How can I put this tactfully ? Some people really should stick to what they're best at.

UK eBay seller skytwang has featured in these columns a number of times before, as a regular purveyor of 7A28-7120 RAF Gen 1's (and CWC G10's) to the military-minded masses. This afternoon he listed another 'refurbished' 7A38-7070, with a 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £425 and currently no option to make an offer.

It's fitted with a Yobokies repro' bezel insert and an incorrect replacement bracelet (which he himself fitted - it's a Seiko p/n B1075S off a 7A28-7040/9, rather than the correct slightly heavier p/n B1241S). Another case of Déjà Vu, too, I'm afraid. This watch, case-back s/n 426319, featured on the previous page of this thread, when it was listed in April by a French eBay seller, then looking somewhat rougher and fitted with a cheap leather strap. In fact, the result of that eBay listing is posted at the top of this page. I recognised the watch from the graunched 10 o'clock pusher and housing. Before you consider buying this watch, I strongly recommend viewing the previous French seller's photos*. Judging by the absence of the graunches on the bottom L.H. corner of the watch case and the current overall even matt silver finish I'd suspect that besides being ultrasonically cleaned, the watch case has been filled, sanded and re-sprayed.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143287950536

This listing is for a 1984 Seiko 7A38-7070 quartz chronograph diver-style watch in clean condition and full working order.

Condition and operation

The case is totally clean, the bezel rotates in both directions but is a little stiff. The bezel insert is a replacement part and is unmarked. The crystal is unmarked, the dial and hands look very good. The watch is fitted with what I believe is the correct original bracelet for the model, which is in very good, clean condition. The back has a scratch where the case back was clumsily opened, and some smaller surface marks. Please refer to the images and study them carefully to assess condition for yourself. The images are good quality and can be enlarged.

All functions operate correctly. Time, time set, chronograph are all working, date and day can be quickset from the crown (one stop out) and advance automatically at midnight. The watch is running without any problems with a new Renata battery. Chrono functions all reset to zero and can be manually re-set if required (pull the crown out to the first stop and press the relevant button to reset the corresponding function, then push the crown back in).

The service history is unknown, but the following work has just been carried out:

- Case stripped and ultrasonically cleaned, including the bezel ring

- Pushers removed, disassembled, ultrasonically cleaned, reassembled, greased and refitted

- Bracelet ultrasonically cleaned (no DNA present...)

- Movement operation checked

- New Renata battery fitted

- Bezel and case back gaskets greased and refitted.

The watch is supplied in a good condition period Seiko box with cardboard outer cover.

Possibly in response to the comments in my previous post, UK eBay re-seller skytwang made a couple of revisions to his listing description for that tarted-up warmed-over 7A38-7070 on Sunday evening.

One that caught my eye and gave me justifiable cause to snigger in contempt was:

The watch is fitted with a very close match to the correct original bracelet for the model. Looks identical to me but has a different reference number.

However, no explanation of how the watch case mysteriously acquired its pristine new finish was forthcoming. Of course, all it ever takes is just one relatively inexperienced mug punter, who hasn't done his homework, to hit the Buy-it-Now button, which is what happened yesterday lunchtime.

This 7A38-7070, in average worn condition, fitted with a replacement Yobokies repro' bezel insert, was listed yesterday evening, by a UK seller, with an almost laughable 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £525, or the option to make a more sensible, much lower offer. Despite his rosy description, the seller hasn't even bothered to replace the scratched crystal - presumably in the interests of maximizing profit.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401681507314

Having unsuccessfully re-listed it twice (for another 30 days at a time) at the same almost laughable 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now price of £525, earlier this evening, UK eBay seller dazzler3369 re-listed his 7A38-7070 once again - this time as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of £340.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401733134028

Once again, please accept my apologies for the double quote (something I actively discourage), but I'm just carrying forward the relevant posts from previous pages. I hadn't bothered adding an update to that effect before, but the 7-day auction for his 7A38-7070, by UK eBay seller dazzler3369 failed to attract any bids and remained unsold. He then reverted back to re-listing it as a Buy-it-Now for the 'pie-in-the-sky' asking price of £525, with the option to make a lower more sensible offer - which evidently someone did and he accepted. It actually sold a couple of days ago.

WatchCount.com's Look-up tool reveals it finally sold for a best offer of £300.

The reason I'm a little late in posting this result, is that for the last couple of days, there appeared to be a rare glitch with WatchCount.com's otherwise normally superbly reliable look-up tool. Since Goofbid's 'Best Offer' tool had become so flaky, I'd come to rely on WatchCount's. But for the last couple of days, every time I tried to look up this 7A38-7070, it erroneously showed (greyed out) that it had sold for £525 - which I couldn't believe, particularly as it had earlier failed to sell for £340. Eventually this morning it came good and gave me the answer I'd expected. :)

While I was frustratedly trying to discover the correct 'Best Offer' sold price, I tried a couple of other search options, including this on 'Completed Seiko 7A38-7070' ....

.... and stumbled across something that I'd previously missed altogether !

Sub-titled: The plot thickens ....

Contrary to popular belief, I don't spend my entire waking hours slaving over my PC keyboard, scouring eBay for every single listing (and re-listing) for a Seiko 7A38. I have a fairly comprehensive set of saved searches which probably find about 90% of them. Occasionally, they'll miss picking up the odd listing, particularly if it's one of short duration. Sometimes I grieve having missed them - other times I'll be annoyed to discover who snatched it from under my nose, as in this instance.

So for the record, here, somewhat belatedly are the details of that other 7A38-7070, which I'd previously failed to spot while the eBay listing was briefly live. It was listed by a UK eBay seller as 'Spares or Repairs', with a Buy-it-now price of £150 on the evening of 27th May.

Vintage Seiko Quartz Chronograph Mens Watch 7A38 7070 **Spares Or Repairs**

Nice watch ideal for restoration project.

Watch keeps time and all the subdials work apart from the minutes subdial on the left which is a bit sticky, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

Due to the issue mentioned i am selling as spares or repairs and no returns so please only hit the "buy it now" if you are happy with this.

I have been told that a service would sort it but the cost is more than i am willing to put in to it,maybe an easy fix for somebody.

Dispatched with Royal Mail 2nd Class signed for.

Thanks for looking.

It sold soon afterwards for the £150 Buy-it-Now price.

So I guess it'll just be a matter of time, before he lists another 7A38-7070 on eBay, fitted with a Yobokies' repro' bezel insert, with some grossly inflated 'pie-in-the-sky' Buy-it-Now asking price.

This average worn condition 7A38-7070, fitted with a Yobokies repro' bezel insert, and suffering from an errant SEIKO dial logo was listed earlier this afternoon by a German eBay seller, with a Buy-it-Now price of 285 Euros, or the option to make an offer. If the loose logo sounds familiar, you might want to flick back to my series of posts in the lower half of page 9 of this thread. I suspect this may possibly be the same 7A38-7070 sold by German eBay seller silversurfer365 in October last year, but as Carlo nearly always deliberately hides the case-back serial number of watches he sells, I can't be sure.

The above 7A38-7070, with the errant SEIKO logo, listed by the German eBay seller two months ago, sold this morning, slightly confusingly as a 'Best Offer', at least that is, according to eBay.  Because it appears the buyer actually paid the full 285 Euros Buy-it-Now price. :/

The eBay Offer / Purchase history shows it was accepted as a Best Offer:

This WatchCount.com search confirms it sold for 285 Euros, regardless of how:

As I'm updating this thread, I may as well mention this, if only to finish the page. Earlier this week, deranged embittered Australian eBayer aussiewatches (who's currently masquerading as seiko7A38forum) resumed his one-man hate campaign against myself and this forum, with another string of abusive, fraudulent and downright slanderous listings. I'm sure a few readers must have seen this bogus listing for a 7A38-7070, while it was briefly live.

Like the other 5 similarly offensive listings, which all used the same description, it was promptly removed, at my request by eBay Trust & Safety, yesterday morning. FWIW, in case you didn't recognize the single image he used stole, it's the first photo on the first page of this thread, from Italian eBay seller cmax-28762's listing for a very nice NOS example in December 2016.

If nothing else, it appears he's learning something from reading this forum section.

He's finally discovered the difference between a 7A38-7070 and a 7A38 'Vulcan'.

(See my posts starting 2nd March on page 5 of the 7A38-701B 'Vulcan thread)

Bit of a late spot ....

This 7A38-7070 in lightly worn, well-cared for condition was advertised for sale on the French watch forum montrespourtous.org last month, with a reasonable asking price of 325 Euros. (The seller was originally asking 375 Euros on Forumamontres).
