Yema Spationaute III Aragatz as an investment ? Erm No.

Post by Seiko7A38 »

The Yema Spationaute III Aragatz full size 43mm version (model # N80P876) is one of my favourite non-Seiko 7A38's. I'll admit to having amassed a collection of around 20 of them. Quite a few are in NOS barely worn condition too. Though over the years, I've steadfastly refused to pay what I consider 'silly prices' for them, as I reiterated many times over in the course of 42 pages of the Yema N7s and N8s spotted on eBay, LeBonCoin and Yahoo.jp thread on the old forum.

Earlier today, a French eBay seller listed a NOS example with the less popular yellow lume, with a ridiculous Buy-it-Now price of 1100 Euros !! :o (There is also the option to make a much lower sensible offer). Obviously, his canny inclusion of 'Mouvement Seiko 7A38' as a sub-title is attracting a fair bit of interest.

The seller's description and easily recognisable case-back serial number of 4-321 made it too easy for me.

This is, of course, another case of Déjà Vu, albeit over 3 years ago. In February 2018, US eBay seller watchaddict412 started listing NOS Yema Spationaute III's, N8 Flygrafs and N81W63 'Breguet Classique clones', which were evidently a cache of unsold retail inventory. Initially, most had Buy-it-Now prices around $700. He later reduced his expectations.

Here's where I wrote about that particular Yema Spationaute III on page 28 of the old forum's Yema N8's spotted thread:

Just to prove there's absolutely no doubt that this is the very same Yema Spationaute III, case-back s/n 4-321, which sold in March 2018 for $405, here's the original US eBay seller's listing photos:

Because I add virtually every Seiko 7A38 and related 15J quartz chronographs that I see listed on eBay, to my watching page (more out of curiosity than anything, as I don't have the slightest inclination of buying them at inflated prices), I'm regularly inundated with broadcasted discount offers from eBay sellers. :x I usually ignore most of them. Yesterday I received one from the would-be profiteering French eBay re-seller of that Yema Spationaute III - for 'only' 870 Euros.

I don't like the yellow lumed baton versions and I certainly had no desire to pay more than double what one's worth for the dubious privilege of adding another example to my collection. So I just ignored it. Checking my eBay watching page, it appears that somebody else was tempted by it though, because it sold late this morning for an undisclosed best offer.

I sincerely hope they weren't foolish enough to pay anything like 870 Euros for it ! :|

Earlier this morning, greedy profiteering French eBay seller chremilos listed another Yema Spationaute III, again with yellowed lume, fitted with an aftermarket blue shark strap, which isn't a particularly close match to the Yema original (as he claims). It's typically over-ambitiously priced with a Buy-it-Now price of 630 Euros - probably more than double what a used example in this condition is realistically worth.

I could waste the rest of my morning wading through the 40-odd pages of the old forum's Yema N8's spotted thread, in an effort to uncover what he actually paid for it, but frankly I can't be arsed. Take it from me, Yema Spationaute III's in this sort of used condition have sold for 200 - 250 Euros (max) in recent years.

Belated Edit: In fact, chremilos may himself have provided a clue. He'd actually been a member of the old forum, but only ever contributed a single post, at the top of page 12 of the Show and Tell - Your newest incoming 7A thread, where, on on July 30th 2017, he uploaded two photos of what could conceivably be the same Yema Spationaute III:

The ludicrously over-priced example he's trying to sell (now reduced to 580 Euros) may be fitted with a different strap, but they're the same variant: minimal printing dial with yellowed lume batons. All he wrote about it in his post was:
The Yema I found in Paris and was sold on Le Bon Coin.

Yesterday evening, another French eBay seller pierrotlunaire54 listed another NOS Yema Spationaute III Aragatz, also coincidentally with the yellowed lume, as a 7-day auction with a highly over-optimistic opening bid price of 750 Euros. Whilst not as outrageously expensive as the example I started this thread with, this seller, who's evidently a collector of space memorabilia, is also clearly attempting to cash in on his earlier investment.

I won't bother posting a screen print of the lengthy detailed description, just quote this pertinent sentence from it:
J’ai acheté cette montre il y a une douzaine d’années dans une boutique aux USA. N° étiquette vendeur : YN80P76AQ. Pas de boite.
Translates as: I bought this watch a dozen years ago from a store in the USA. Vendor label number: YN80P76AQ. No box.

The clue to how much he originally paid for it is the Yema card hang tag, of which he's amusingly obliterated the retail price. It did read $475, but that's academic, because he probably paid considerably less. Going back to August 2012, US eBay seller izeldor (who it transpired was once the US importer / distributor for Yema) started listing NOS Spationaute III's. Initially they offered them with opening bid prices of $250, but later reduced that to $225 - and a good many sold for that price, for example, this one from page 2 of the old forum's Yema N7s and N8s spotted on eBay .... thread:

I can't be certain which of their auctions he won, because US eBay seller izeldor re-used the same set of small-ish photos for subsequent listings, without including individual shots of the case-backs showing serial numbers. :|

I suppose I should also mention the other Yema Spationaute III, listed by the same French eBay seller pierrotlunaire54, around the same time yesterday evening - because compared to his NOS example, it's something of a frankened horror ! According to him it's in “très bon état” !

I started to compose this post here, following on from my previous, thought better of it and decided to post it where it rightfully belongs, here in the Heads Up on yet another 7A38 Franken(s) - Part 3 !! thread

Rather remiss of me, I didn't recognise that eBay ID pierrotlunaire54 last October. I've since realized that it belongs to Dominique M., a French space collector that I met either through ForumaMontres or the French space conquest forum.
I'm not sure why, but over the last 6 months, Dominique has been selling off his collection of space ephemera on eBay. Like many collectors, including myself, when the erstwhile US importer / eBay seller izeldor offered that batch of NOS Yema Spationaute III's on eBay, back in 2012, Dominique purchased one of each version. On Friday, he listed his second one, with white lume batons, fitted with the later style polished hands and shark strap, on eBay, as a 7-day auction with a possibly over-optimistic opening bid price of 600 Euros.

Sharp-eyed readers may have noticed that I hadn't followed up my earlier post from last October, regarding the French eBay seller's previous listing for a Yema Spationaute III, with either a result or outcome.

That's because, as I'd suspected, it didn't actually sell. 8-) Indeed, the French seller pierrotlunaire54 re-listed it this afternoon, using the same set of 11 photos as before, with a somewhat over-optimistic Buy-it-Now price of 650 Euros, currently without the option to make an offer.

Earlier this month, a forum member sent me a PM, asking whether I'd seen a mint boxed Yema Spationaute III listed on the Dutch classified site marktplaats.nl.

My PM reply went along the lines of:
Thanks for the heads up, Ben. ;)

I hadn't seen the advert. But apart from the fact that I've already got far too many of them (20), it's way more than I would ever personally be prepared to pay for one myself. From memory, the most I've ever paid was €300 Euros, but that was a couple of years ago now.

Looking at the US market lacquered wood box, I strongly suspect this is from the cache of NOS Spationaute III's sold on eBay in 2012 by izeldor (who was once the US importer / distributor). Most of them sold for around $250. I bought 3 of them. There was a Dutch guy, who posts on horlogeforum.nl as 'johngo'. I think his real name is something like John Goeverts. He bought two of them. He sold one of them on Catawiki in December 2020 for €341. (See here on the old archived forum). Perhaps this is his other one, though I don't think he's the seller ....
Yesterday the Dutch seller listed it on eBay, but with a Buy-it-Now price of $650 (rather than Euros):

Nice, but expensive, particularly for a less desirable yellow lumed variant. Nor is it '1988' as stated in the seller's title and description. The 2 xxx prefix serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1990.

Sellers continue to ask inflated prices for NOS Yema Spationaute III's. Thanks to a heads up from my French contact, here's another example that was listed on Chronomania's Coin des Affaires earlier this afternoon, asking €600 Euros.

Price apart, I have to say I'm not impressed by the crumpled paper background and poor photography.

Do you think lower serial number 2-161 has any influence on the price sellers are able to get?

Absolutely no effect whatsoever. Chancers will try it on, regardless of whether it's a 1-xxx or 6-xxx prefix serial number.

If you've read through my earlier posts in this thread, you'll possibly have noticed that I'd mentioned a US eBay seller izeldor on a few occasions, who (as F Ross LLC / Watchfactory.com) was once the official US importer and distributor for Yema (besides other brands). I cited them in the context of being the original suppliers (back in 2012 and 2013) of some of the once-NOS Yema Spationaute III's offered for sale at inflated prices. There's a link in an earlier post above to the old forum's Yema N8 spotted thread, where I documented them. I thought they'd sold them all long ago, but in January 2017 I put a member of TZ-UK in touch with them and they supplied him with 'the last one they had in stock'.

Seems it wasn't quite the last. Overnight izeldor listed another NOS Yema Spationaute III as a 7-day auction with a highly optimistic opening bid price of $875 or the option to Buy-it-Now for an absolutely ridiculous $2250 !! It's being offered through eBay's dysfunctional Global Shipping Program, which adds another $200 onto the opening bid price.

Without going into details, I'll be polite and say that there are some inaccuracies in Dory's description.

The thing to note is that this watch has the less popular yellow lumed dial (with the later polished hands). They were having difficulty shifting them 10 years ago, with some selling for the reduced opening bid price of $225 or little more.

One last point. Observant readers may have noticed that eBay seller izeldor's location has changed from Wood-Ridge, New Jersey (the site of their watch shop, 10 years ago) to Claymont, Delaware. It looks like they eventually sold the shop and retired to the countryside. A quick google reveals 194, Hackensack Street is now an Art Studio: Floratorium.

The 7-day US eBay auction for izeldor's last Yema Spationaute III ended last night, selling for the $875 opening bid price.

The title of this thread possibly isn't entirely appropriate for this particular post as, in this instance, there isn't any hint of attempted profiteering, but as it concerns the resale of a (well) known Yema Spationaute III Aragatz, I'm going to tack it onto this thread, rather than start another. In the early hours of this morning, a familiar US eBay seller hairspring listed a well-kept example, as a 10-day auction, with an opening bid of $275 or the option to Buy-it-Now for $560.

The seller's eBay ID hairspring is well known to me, as belonging to a member of the old forum, Don Garrison, who used to post regularly as 'Donwatch'. The lacquered wooden Yema presentation box points to where the watch originated from. Yes it's another izeldor NOS watch from 2012. But Don didn't buy it from them. He bought it in a auction by an eBay consignment seller in May 2014, for $280. The watch had previously belonged to the late Mike Kelley. R.I.P..

Belated Edit: Don subsequently revised his listing a couple of times, including adding 'Spationaute III' into the title and increasing the Buy-it-Now price from $560 to $650.
