Seiko 7A38 - by the numbers

This well-worn 7A38-7010, which has suffered water ingress damage, was listed late yesterday evening by a Dutch eBay seller, as a 7-day auction, with an opening bid price of 5 Euros. It's difficult to determine if there's any damage to the dial in the seller's variable quality photos, or if what can be seen are actually reflections. Most importantly there's no photo of the movement.

Seiko 7A38-7010 water damage. 

I originally bought the watch for parts, but started collecting swiss watching. Its a rare watch so I hope another collector can set it to proper use.

The 7-day Dutch eBay auction for a well-worn 7A38-7010, with unspecified water damage, ended yesterday evening, selling for 151 Euros after 34 bids.

Das Quartzwerk wurde teilzerlegt, gereinigt, überprüft, geölt (Möbius) und wieder zusammengesetzt und mittels Zeitwaage eingestellt, somit befindet sich die Uhr, technisch im einwandfreien Zustand.

Drücker Zerlegt, gereinigt, neue Dichtungen. (Bodendichtung neu)

Glas original (Seiko Hardlex) mit einen sehr kleinen Kratzer bei der kl. Sekunde.

Batterie neu (Silberöxid 12/2020)

Armband Seiko, jedoch nicht original zur Uhr. Es ist ein sehr ähnliches B1688, welches meiner Meinung nach am nächsten

den Original kommt. Gesamtlänge des Armbandes im geschlossenen Zustand ca. 17cm

Alle Funktionen arbeiten einwandfrei (Uhrzeit, Datum/Tag, Chronograph + Reset aller Zeiger auf 12)

Drücker knackig und leichtgängig. 

Zifferblatt und Zeiger im sehr guten Zustand. 

Normale Tragespuren auf Gehäuse und Armband vorhanden.

Seiko 7A38-7010 Chronograph aka Speedmaster from 11/1983 and serviced in 10/2019

Movement cleaned, inspected, oiled (Möbius) and adjusted. Technically in very good shape.

Pusher cleaned and new gasket

Crystal still original hardlex with a tiny scratch at the small second.

Battery new (Silver oxide 12/2020)

Backgasket new.

Bracelet Seiko, but not the original for this model. Its a Seiko B1688 which looks very similar and have a closed length of approx 17cm.

The Watch working perfect in every way.

Dial and hands in very good shape without defects. 

Signs of wear on bracelet and case. 

Shipping only inside of Europe insured and online trackable.

I'm not sure if he read what I'd written above, about his 'possibly over-optimistic Buy-it-Now price' (the German eBay seller, Finn, is a forum member), but later yesterday evening, he revised the listing, reducing it from 325 down to 275 Euros. His 7A38-7010, fitted with a non-original replacement Seiko bracelet, subsequently sold in the early hours of this morning. Not for the reduced Buy-it-Now price of 275 Euros, but for an undisclosed best offer.

Looks like the pre-Christmas sale of that 7A38-7010, fitted with a non-original Seiko replacement bracelet fell through. The German eBay seller (forum member Finn) re-listed it this morning, with the Buy-it-Now price reduced to 255 Euros (without the option to make an offer).

This well-worn 7A38-7010 was listed late yesterday evening by an Italian eBay seller, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 250 Euros. He appears to be at pains to point out the fact that it's fitted with the correct original Seiko p/n Z1118S bracelet (see the last close-up photo). I suppose that's a saving grace.

The above 7-day eBay auction for a well-worn 7A38-7010 failed to attract a bid. The Italian seller re-listed it late last night, as another 7-day auction, with a significantly reduced opening bid price of 180 Euros.

That re-listed 7-day auction for a well-worn 7A38-7010 ended a couple of weeks ago, again without any bids placed - unsold. The Italian seller hasn't re-listed it since, so perhaps he may have sold it off eBay after the auction ended.

What reminded me and prompted that somewhat belated update was that yesterday evening, another Italian eBay seller listed another well-worn 7A38-7010 as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 124 Euros. He's erroneously titled the listing as a 7A38-701A and repeated the careless mistake in his description. From the photos (including his own shot of the case-back stamping), it's obviously a 7A38-7010.

This 7A38-7010 in average well-worn condition was posted For Sale on Instagram earlier this afternoon, by an Italian dealer. Unusually, for this platform, he's actually stated his asking price - 290 Euros. It seems a more common practice to just write 'DM for information'. Looking at the overall condition in his photos, I'd opine that he's pushing his luck, but over the last couple of hours his post has attracted 100 'Likes', so who knows.

The 5 photos used in the eBay listing are the same as he'd posted to Instagram (6).

After a couple of prompts via Instagram, the seller realized his mistake and re-listed.
