Yet another profiteering (UK) eBay seller to avoid !!

Funnily enough, it was this UK eBay seller's listing of a well-worn 7A38-7190, fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet, that I'd written about in this other thread, that drew my attention to his other recent re-selling activity. :o

Regardless of the prices he's paid for them (usually purchased from Europe for around 150 Euros), he's currently listing all three of them with the same greedily marked-up Buy-it-Now price of £355, using the archetypal chancer's favourite adjectives like, beautiful, superb and stunning ! All that's missing is 'awesome'. Here's links to the listings:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beautiful-Ra ... 4954659482 (7A38-7240 two-tone, listed at lunchtime today).
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stunning-Vin ... 4953326222 (7A38-7190 two-tone, incorrect bracelet, listed yesterday).
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Superb-Vinta ... 4917893064 (7A38-727A stainless, listed on 2nd July).

I can't be bothered to post screen individual screen prints, but here's the current summary of his 7A38 listings:

Here's where he bought them and what he paid:

The 7A38-7240 which re-seller hollizaak007 listed this lunchtime was listed by French eBay seller 2015-mokra in the last week of May with a reasonable Buy-it-Now price of 169 Euros. I'm a bit surprised no-one had purchased it before.

Needless to say, the case-back serial number 773308 matches.

The well-worn two-tone 7A38-7190, fitted with an incorrect non-original bracelet, which I'd already written up in detail in the appropriate thread, was listed by an Italian eBay seller on the 30th May, initially with a Buy-it-Now price of 220 Euros. He later reduced it three times in 10 Euro decrements to 180 Euros. Throughout the listing duration, there was also the option to make an offer, but nobody appears to have exercised it. On 10th July, the seller ended the listing as no longer available, having presumably succumbed to a 'back door' offer from hollizaak007.

Although the Italian eBay seller didn't include a photo of the case-back showing the serial number, the incorrect Seiko replacement bracelet fitted certainly matches. Both bracelet and clasp appear to have been re-brushed and polished.

The stainless 7A38-727A was listed briefly on Saturday afternoon of 19th June, with a very reasonable Buy-it-Now price of 160 Euros and the option to make an offer. During the 3½ hours it was live, 40 other people had viewed the listing. Checking the eBay Purchase History reveals that opportunistic profiteering re-seller hollizaak007 was in fact the only person to make an offer.

The case-back serial number 870116 (and the long scratch, which he's conveniently obscured with the clasp) matches.

I should have known this forum a few hours ago..
I bought the 7A38-727A 'cause it's my birth year and the price was not too high (considering what can be seen).

Does the watch conform though?

Sorry to have taken the shine off your purchase. Don't be too annoyed with yourself, you're not the first and certainly won't be the last to fall victim to profiteering re-sellers like hollizaak007. There are so many of them active on eBay. Still, at least you didn't pay the full Buy-it-Now price of £355. (I'd previously overlooked to mention that when he first listed it on 2nd July, he was asking £375).

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184917893064

Although there were 30 watchers, the eBay Purchase History shows that you were the only person to make an offer(s).

In terms of conformity, the watch appears to be a correct and original example of the 7A38-727A SAA131J. The only detraction is that scratch on the case-back, which the re-seller appears to have deliberately obscured in his photos.

For future reference: although nominally a European export model, the 7A38-727A SAA131J appears to have been targeted specifically at the German market - so it follows that eBay Germany is normally the best place to search for one, where they can sometimes be picked up relatively cheaply (as demonstrated by hollizaak007). Both mine came from there: the first (a long time ago) was in very good condition, the second more recent, was an almost mint head, fitted with a horrible generic expanding replacement bracelet (which I naturally replaced with the correct Seiko p/n B1615S, donated by a scrapped 7A38-7270). Checking my records, I paid €53.60 in June 2009 and €131.00 in February 2019 for them respectively. I'll post a photo of one in the WRUW thread presently. Done. ;)

Thank you!

I paid £340. I wasn't looking for this specific reference (I prefer long indices and framed subdials) but the year 1988 + nice condition made me thought I got to take the first one I see that is not €1000!

Thank you in turn for your candour, Mat. I wasn't going to ask. £340 ? Ouch ! :o

The dial batons on the silvery-white 726L dial (which incidentally is unique to this stainless 7A38-727A variant) aren't what I'd consider particularly short. Coincidentally, there's a stainless 7A38-727B SAA149J (another fairly obscure UK market variant) which has a different off-white 723O dial with shorter non-lumed batons.

He may have got lucky with that stainless 7A38-727A, but profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 clearly has much to learn about the comparative values of less popular Seiko 7A38's. Earlier this evening he listed this only average worn condition gold-tone 7A38-7289, with what appears to have become his standard Buy-it-Now price of £355 regardless.

He also appears to be casting his net wider to acquire his sordid stock in trade (encroaching on flobaca's territory*).
Here's where he bought it last month off eBay in the States for an undisclosed best offer.

Needless to say the case-back serial # 709436 matches.

*Ironic that. Profiteering US eBay re-seller flobaca, whom in better times, one might possibly have expected to buy this 7A38-7289, has himself been re-listing a gold-tone 7A38-7280, which I'd posit is a slightly more desirable variant in better condition, since the beginning of June, asking $175 - still without success.

Re: Yet another profiteering (UK) eBay seller to avoid !!

Post by Seiko7A38 »

It would appear that there are other parallels which might be drawn between long-time profiteering US eBay seller flobaca and comparative newcomer to the 7A38 scene, UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007. Indeed, it may have been his earlier attempts to climb on the more lucrative 7A38-702x 'Royal Oak' bandwagon that had confused me a while back.

Readers may recall this post I made at the beginning of July:
Seiko7A38 wrote: Sun Jul 04, 2021 7:12 am
Seiko7A38 wrote: Wed Jun 09, 2021 7:17 amThere's also another possibility pending, so I give you my prediction for one of his future offerings.
Forgive me readers. With hindsight, I seem to have got that prediction wrong. Whereas that stainless 7A38-7020 certainly looked like typical 'potential flobaca fodder', I now believe that suitably cheap example was snapped up by another, as yet unidentified, competing buyer. Indeed they may have beaten flobaca to the punch on two occasions.
Not wishing to make excuses for my earlier confusion, it was directly due to eBay's increased encryption of buyer ID's as displayed on the purchase history screen. With hindsight, I now believe in those two instances, the encrypted buyer ID (that I incorrectly assumed belonged to flobaca's alter ego zenodass44) may in reality have belonged to hollizaak007. They share three common characters: a, o and z. 'Z' being the one that had thrown me a curved ball at the time.

Whereas I haven't seen hollizaak007 listing a 7A38-7020 or 7A38-7029 yet, unless I've missed a quick sale, he's certainly considered buying at least one recently. Of more anon, once I've had some food - call it a very late lunch. :)

This stainless 7A38-7020 in average worn condition, the first on many last month (but unlike the majority, without the 'Royal Oak' misnomer in the title), was listed by a UK eBay seller on 9th July as a 5-day auction, with an over-optimistic opening bid price of £350. I didn't bother taking a screenshot of the listing, but here's half of the seller's 10 photos.

The eBay Bidding / Purchase History shows a slightly confusing encrypted buyer ID of 2***a (rather than o***a or z***a), but their feedback rating of 1874 exactly matches the current feedback number of UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007.

That became academic, when whoever the buyer was (ahem) reneged on the transaction. Given his affinity for listing Seiko 7A38's @ a preferred standard marked-up price of £355, there clearly wasn't enough profit margin to be had.

The UK seller subsequently re-listed it a few times, always as 5-day auctions, sometimes with option to make an offer:
With the opening bid increased to £375, Again @ £375, Reduced to £325, Reduced to £300 and most recently to £275.

It sold again, at lunchtime today, for another undisclosed best offer (presumably less than £275):

I suspect some readers may be tiring of my continued diatribes about the re-selling activities of certain eBay sellers. It's a fact of life: it's rife and getting worse by the day. I sometimes try to convince myself that I don't really care and just accept and try to ignore it. But every now and then an instance really gets my back up and I simply have to vent. :x

The latest chancer to jump on the bandwagon is UK eBay seller tibbsco. He first came up on my radar in January this year, when he re-sold a less than average condition two-tone 7A38-7270. I didn't think much about it at the time; what with the transitioning of the forum to the new phpBB platform, I had other more important things on my mind. Looking at his deceptive misleadingly worded eBay profile, you'd probably never even guess he dealt in watches.

Rewind back to a week ago Monday - 25th October. Late in the morning, a UK eBay seller listed a stainless 7A38-7000, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of £48. (I distinctly remember there wasn't the option to make an offer.) I was probably one of the first few to view it and placed the opening bid. I didn't think to take a screen print of the listing while it was briefly live, because I hadn't anticipated the outcome, but you can still view the full (ended) version by following this link. Here's most of the details and a few of the 12 photos.

It was in average worn condition, with faded black bracelet interconnecting links, but nicely photographed and honestly described. Now don't get me wrong - I certainly didn't need another stainless 7A38-7000, as I already have at least three or four examples in my collection in better condition. Given recent eBay selling prices, I expected it would probably sell for far more than I was prepared to pay. Nevertheless I added it to my watching page and placed 3 bids, bumping the competing bidder up to his maximum of £100. I was going to place another bid after lunch, but when I clicked on the link again, I found, much to my annoyance, that the seller had ended the listing as sold:

The eBay Bidding History shows it sold for just £100 ! :o Later that afternoon, when I'd finished seething, I messaged the seller, enquiring now much he'd actually sold it for and he sheepishly confirmed the low figure. He subsequently correctly declined to disclose the buyer's identity.

The other bidder, whose encrypted ID o***0 (408) I didn't immediately recognise, had evidently persuaded the gullible seller to end the auction early and sell it to him for his current high bid price !! WatchCount's Look-up tool shows that the (7-day auction) listing was live for just over an hour and received 31 views.

I'd a strong suspicion it had been 'back-doored' by another flipping fast profit merchant, so I'd been keeping a watchful eye on various platforms and sure enough it rocked up on Instagram this Monday afternoon, posted by redlinehorology.

Image

Although the photo wasn't particularly well lit, I instantly recognised it as being the same 7A38-7000, sold a week ago, from the small nick in the bezel adjacent to 'CH' on the Tachymeter scale and the various light scratches on the crystal.

There are two dozen comments and (typical fawning sycophantic) replies. One of them, which raised my hackles reads:
Go for it, I think I prefer the 7A28 but this came up at a great price so had to take it!
At least one comment (which I'd posted as a reply to the above) has since been deleted:
Yeah. I'd say that was a 'steal' @ £100 !
Another reply by redlinehorology (a.k.a. Liam), which serves to show what a phoney little hypocrite he really is, reads:
Definitely sir, one of my favourites from Seiko 🔥
Evidently it soon fell out of favour.

By Monday evening, it was listed on eBay as a 3-day auction with an opening bid price of £50. Oddly, unlike the original seller, tibbsco has omitted including the all important 7A38-7000 model number in either his title or description, which certainly would have got more visibility. Perhaps that was a deliberate tactic on his part, hoping it might go un-noticed.

Apart from the faded black bracelet interconnecting links, which are more clearly visible in his eBay listing photos, the matching case-back serial number 3N0379 provides conclusive proof. Note the misleadingly worded description.

At the time of writing, with 12 hours of the auction remaining, the bidding has temporarily stalled at £195 after 16 bids. However, with 77 watchers including myself, I suspect it may yet go considerably higher, especially if given any further 'assistance'. At this comparatively early stage, it's worth taking a closer look at the current eBay Bidding History:

Note the encrypted ID 3***o (or o***o with feedback 59) which has so far placed 3 bids. Not exactly a surprise to discover that they have 100% 30-day bidding activity with the seller, which typically indicates a shill. :!:

The 3-day auction ended a few moments ago, with the 7A38-7000 selling for £330 after 25 bids, netting the unethical re-seller tibbsco an undeserved quick profit of £230 (less eBay fees) for minimal effort. Frankly I'm disgusted and it's probably best that I don't write any more tonight, because I've had a couple of Martinis and might speak my mind.

However, this sordid tale of greed and speculation may not be finished yet. The encrypted winning bidder ID 3***0, has a feedback rating of 1919, which just happens to be the same as another profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007. :!: Assuming I've correctly identified him and he proceeds with the transaction, this probably won't be the last we've seen of this particular stainless 7A38-7000.

I've just spotted another prime example of greedy wilful profiteering by another UK eBay seller victor-copi0, who uses similar mark-ups to hollizaak007. Rather than start another thread, I'm going to add it onto this one, because the title is still appropriate. This well-worn stainless 7A38-7190 was listed earlier this afternoon, by the aforementioned grubby little shark, with a Buy-it-Now price of £369, which is frankly laughable given the condition - and especially bearing in mind what he paid for it himself.

The same stainless 7A38-7190 was listed by a UK eBay seller as a 7-day auction and sold 4 days ago for £160.55:

Naturally, he's given it the obligatory parallel plug on Instagram, but evidently words failed him.

That stainless 7A38-7000 still hasn't re-appeared, marked-up even higher yet again, as I suspected it might have done. Indeed, profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 had been remarkably quiet in recent months, at least as far as his listing any more grossly over-priced 7A38's went. I was reminded of his utter greed and stubbornness a couple of days ago, when he re-listed those two 7A38's, which remain unsold since July and August last year (see higher up this page) yet again, still at the same ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of £365.

However, I have a suspicion he may be ramping up his re-selling activities in the very near future, by listing more 7A38's.

Those of you who follow eBay closely, as I do, cannot have failed to notice the number of Seiko 7A38's listed by German eBay seller henzz1337 earlier this month. Best I can tell, he's sold approximately a dozen so far and yesterday evening he listed 9 assorted 7A48's. You'd have had to be on the ball to spot a few of the 7A38's, because some sold very quickly, soon after they were listed, the majority as best offer accepted (against relatively low Buy-it-Now prices), like these 3, which sold within a matter of seconds of each other:

Checking his feedback, I noticed the buyer (whose own feedback was 1944) had left him the same positive comment:

It didn't click straight away, but that encrypted eBay ID i***a is none other than profiteering UK re-seller hollizaak007. So far, he hasn't left positive feedback against all SIX 7A38's he's purchased from German eBay seller henzz1337. He'd also purchased this NOS condition gold-tone 7A38-7060 from him a few days later, again for an undisclosed best offer:

The other two 7A38's he purchased from henzz1337, also on 8th January, again in very quick succession, for undisclosed best offers, were a two-tone 7A38-7060 and a two-tone 7A38-6080 (which had a typo in the listing title):

Presumably these other five two-tone 7A38's will duly appear listed on eBay UK by hollizaak007, at some point in the not too distant future, with their prices similarly extortionately marked up.

Sooner than I thought. I don't even need to insert a partial quote, because the damning evidence of profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007's unashamed utter greed is shown immediately above. At lunchtime today, he listed that exact same two-tone 7A38-6080, with a typically extortionately marked-up Buy-it-now price of £475 !! :o

Looks like he's decided to brazen it out. Here's the first of the two-tone 7A38-728A's, the common-or-garden, almost ubiquitous SAA122J version, which he listed this afternoon at his usual standard (minimum) Buy-it-Now price of £365.

Had to chuckle at the ignorance shown by his writing in the description: 'Dial is very rare with gold chapter rings.' when of course it's the German market variant without the gold sub-dial rings (SAA128J) which is actually the scarcer of the two variants. There's a mildly humorous model specific thread on the old forum discussing this.

His shot of the case-back reveals only the last number '9' of the six-digit serial number:

But it's relative position and other fairly obvious circumstantial evidence point to the full number being 834289:

Presumably more will follow in due course (sooner than later). Here's a link to hollizaak007's current 7A38 eBay listings, which will also come in handy when he pulls his regular stunt of ending and re-listing.

Not that it's really any of my business, but as I have a vested interest in 7A38 pricing vs real world values, I couldn't help noticing that would-be profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 had since left more feedback for the German eBay seller henzz1337, including the two-tone 7A38-6080 and gold-tone 7A38-7060 that he'd already listed on eBay himself, with typically greedily marked-up prices a fortnight earlier.

Apart from three 7A38's he'd omitted to leave feedback for earlier, he also left identical positive feedbacks against a stainless 7A38-7130 and two-tone 7A48-6000, which he'd bought from the German seller a week or two later, both for undisclosed best offers. I'd already spotted them (from my eBay watching page), but not bothered to mention before.
