Re: Yet another profiteering (UK) eBay seller to avoid !!

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I don't bother regularly monitoring prices for Seiko 7A28's. I know they've become just as crazy as 7A38's over the last couple of years, particularly thanks to greedy profiteering re-sellers like Italians oysterdelarge727, simone00simone and their despicable ilk. In fact since I switched off my automated eBay searches on the 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1, I rarely search on 7A28's at all. Something else caught my eye this morning, which prompted me to run a worldwide search on 'Seiko 7A28' for the first time in a long while. This 7A28-7020 SPR007J listed by profiteering UK re-seller hollizaak007 came up in the first page of results. He's asking a typically greedy Buy-it-Now price of £1250, probably at least DOUBLE the current market value - particularly now as the 'James Bond' connection is in question.

It was listed last week, but I'm not sure if it's a new listing, because he ended and re-listed all his listings on 8th April.

Profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 had re-listed that 7A28-7020 'James Bond' a few times and at some point he increased the already extortionate Buy-it-Now price from £1250 to £1400. It appears to have sold yesterday afternoon for an undisclosed best offer.

Brazen profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 proved my prediction correct, when earlier this afternoon, he listed the ex-henzz1337 / goosefeather1 two-tone 7A38-727A on eBay again, with a typical greedy Buy-it-Now price of £395. There's no mention in the description of his having fitted a new battery, which is presumably all it needed. His action in having purchased it back from his previous buyer for 40% of what they paid him shows he is truly unscrupulous.

The full sorry saga of this watch can be found on the previous page, in a series of posts. Checking my eBay watching page, it appears that greedy unscrupulous profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 (a.k.a. Gary Turner) finally managed to find another mug punter buyer for the two-tone 7A38-727A yesterday morning. Yes, he re-sold it twice !

I'd never purposely criticise an eBay seller for letting a watch go too cheaply. Let's face it, it doesn't happen very often nowadays. However, it does appear you need to be careful whom you sell it to, sometimes. This two-tone 7A38-728A was listed on Monday evening this week, by a UK eBay seller, with a Buy-it-Now price of £130. Not particularly cheap, in view of the condition. The watch was clearly suffering from a badly tarnished gold-plated bezel and was fitted with a non-original 7-hole adjustment clasp, presumably to compensate for a shortage of bracelet adjustment links. It sold on Tuesday morning for the £130 asking price. I didn't think any more about it at the time.

I didn't recogise it immediately, but the same 7A38-728A was listed on eBay yesterday afternoon, by profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaaak007 (a.k.a. Gary Turner), with a typically greedily marked-up Buy-it-Now price of £375 !! :o

He may have given the tarnished bezel a quick polish, but the non-standard 7-hole adjustment clasp and the case-back serial number 845561 are visible in his photos, so it's definitely the same watch.

That dear readers, is a prime example of why it's so difficult to find a reasonably priced (heaven forbid cheap) Seiko 7A38 - of just about any model on eBay nowadays. I'm glad I bought mine years ago, before the profiteering re-sellers started ruining it for everybody. Here's a fairly recent wrist shot of my two-tone 7A38-728A, owned since July 2009:

Both come supplied with rather secondhand looking Seiko presentation boxes. Unless I've failed to spot any over the last 4 months, I believe these are the last two of a large number of 7A's he's purchased from German eBay seller henzz1337 during that period, though not in the order he acquired them.

Indeed, the 7A38-7280 which he's asking a risible £385 for is one of the first batch of three 7A38-728x's he purchased at the beginning of January, which for reasons best known to himself, he has held back until now.

Was it really August 2021 when I wrote that about the gold-tone 7A38-7289 he'd just listed ? It seems that Gary Turner (a.k.a. profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007) hasn't learned anything in over 2½ years, because not only does that 7A38-7289 still remain unsold, but he's trying it on again with another common-or-garden gold-tone. At lunchtime today, he listed a well-worn gold-tone 7A38-7190 with a typically greedy, almost risible Buy-it-Now price of £325.

Here's where he bought the exact same watch, complete with chipped crystal, less than a week ago from UK eBay seller vintagehoneypots, winning their 7-day auction with a last second snipe bid for a mere £102.

This morning, as I scanned through my overnight eBay search result notifications, I had to stop and do a double take.
A US eBay seller caseysedition had listed the same ex-hollizaak007 gold-tone 7A38-7190 as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of only $1, using his same 8 photos and listing title.

If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see how much it makes compared to vintagehoneypots previous 7-day auction.

I thought that might be good for a laugh. The US eBay re-seller's auction ended on Monday evening, with the gold-tone 7A38-7190 selling for $130.50 after 34 bids. That's equivalent to just over £100 quid - slightly less than the £102 it was sold for by vintagehoneypots in March. So much for the £325 that profiteering scum hollizaak007 was asking.

I've lost count of the number of times that greedy profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 (a.k.a. Gary Turner) has unsuccessfully re-listed his two-tone 7A38-728A, on an almost weekly basis, since the end of October 2023. Originally he was asking a ridiculous £375 as a Buy-it-Now (see my post higher up this page). More recently, the Buy-it-Now price had come down to £315. This morning, he's re-listed it yet again (but this time without the Seiko presentation box) and a fresh set of photos, with the price reduced to 'only' £275, with the option to a make an offer. Only needs another hundred knocking off before he might find a buyer then.

Re: Yet another profiteering (UK) eBay seller to avoid !!

I didn't see the point of starting yet another thread, when this one already existed with a perfectly appropriate title. Although his much re-listed gold-tone 7A38-7289 still remains unsold, after nearly 5 years, it appears that profiteering UK eBay re-seller hollizaak007 has given up the chase for the time being. But there's always another ready to jump on the bandwagon at the first opportunity.

I've recently noticed an increase in prices being asked for gold-tone 7A38-7000 SAA008J's. They had always been much cheaper than the stainless SAA007J version, because 1980's gold tones had fallen out of fashion. Perhaps it might be something to do with the recently discovered 'Max Zorin' connection which I mentioned towards the end of this thread.
UK eBay seller overtimegb is currently asking a ludicrous £795 for his average condition gold-tone 7A38-7000 SAA008J, compared to 'only' £695 for his stainless 7A38-7000 SAA007J. But that's way overpriced too, IMHO.

It wasn't that anomoly which prompted me to out another instance of blatant profiteering, but this example, which was listed by greedy UK re-seller pawil_878 at lunchtime today. It first appeared with a Buy-it-Now price of £495, to which eBay has since added buyer fees, increasing the price to £511.60

The very same gold-tone 7A38-7000 had previously been listed as a low start (99p) 7-day eBay auction, which ended on 11th May (less than a week ago) selling for a much more realistic £174 :!:

I remember the auction well, because I bid on it. Before anybody accuses me of 'sour grapes', I would like to add that my last 'throwaway' bid was £123.45 on 7th May (4 days before it ended). I never had any intention of winning it. ;)

Needless to say, the case-back serial number 3O0380 matches:

Overtimegb listed that gold-tone 7A38-7000 on 25th April. It was previously listed by UK eBay seller vintagehoneypots on 13th April as a low start (99p) 7-day auction, which ended on 20th April, selling for £130.88. :!:

I suspect the reason I never sussed it before is because overtimegb has switched the Seiko presentation boxes (the vintagehoneypots listing photos showed a larger style with outer cardboard box). He's also added a couple of spurious tags. Plus the bracelet appeared to be broken in the earlier listing. But then again it may just have been an adjustment link which had opened out and was easily bent back or removed. One thing is for certain, retrospectively checking the photos of the case-back, it's the same watch - serial number 3D2898 !!

Having previously allowed his gold-tone 7A38-7000 to slip by without passing comment, I decided it would probably be a good idea to retrospectively look into overtimegb's similarly over-priced stainless 7A38-7000. It was listed on April 12th, with a highly ambitious Buy-it-Now asking price of £695.

Again, my humble apologies for having missed slating this earlier. I don't have any excuse. It wasn't difficult to find either. It was previously listed as a low start (99p) 7-day auction by another UK eBay seller, in the last week of March. That auction ended on the 29th March, selling for a quite reasonable £226.26. :!:
