This unusual '7A38', which is supposed to be a 'Mint New' / 'Eastern Market Only Product', was listed yesterday evening by a dishonest Italian eBay seller, with a Buy-it-Now price of €400 Euros. In reality it's nothing of the sort. It's a complete Franken. The case (including Roman numeral dial ring) and bracelet are from a well-worn two-tone 7A48-7000, fitted with the white 718L dial, hands and movement from a gold-tone 7A38-7260. As many of these Italian scammers do, there's a generic Seiko presentation box, instruction and guarantee booklets chucked in to give the impression of 'newness'. The true condition can be seen from the wear to the crown and amount of stretch in the bracelet.

It's been a while since I've seen such a blatantly mis-represented franken, so I simply couldn't let this one pass without flagging it up. This supposedly 'sublime' 7A38-7010 was listed at lunchtime today by a dishonest French eBay seller, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of €150 Euros.

I've only uploaded 4 of the seller's 15 photos, but that's sufficient to analyse it. It's built on the watch case of what once was a 7A38-7010, retaining that watch's black plastic minute ring. The silvery-white 708L dial (and presumably also the movement) is from a stainless 7A38-7060. The sub-dial hands are from something else again, possibly a 7A38-7120 or a gold-tone 7A38-727A. The bracelet is a p/n B1170S from a stainless 7A38-7000. A proper bitza - and one to be avoided.

Here's what a 7A38-7010 SAA001J should look like.

Edit: By late afternoon, the listing had been removed. The following morning (Thusday) I sent the seller a cheeky message (in French), enquiring what had become of it. He replied: Annonce effacée par eBay pour une soit disant contrefaçon (Advert deleted by eBay for so-called counterfeit), attaching this copy of eBay's message.

So 'Well Done' to those eBay members who reported it ! (I hadn't actually bothered).

Do you ever get that feeling of Déjà Vu ? I do, all the time. Especially having an almost photographic memory, it's frequently impossible to forget some of the horrors I see listed on eBay. This post is about two sightings of what's probably the worst 7Axx Franken that I've seen in a long time.

It first appeared in one of my eBay saved search notification emails at 2:25 pm on Tuesday 4th March. It was briefly listed by a UK eBay seller ccbrightonlr, presumably an eBay store front for Cash Converters, London Road, Brighton, who claim to be the UK's largest pawnbroker and second-hand store. It was listed as a 7A38-7180. What a joke.

The watch case was from a well-worn two-tone 7A48-5000. It retained that watch's white plastic minute ring (hence the curved recess at 12 to accommodate the original movement's moonphase sub-dial). The crystal was almost opaque with scratches. The 709L dial, hands and presumably movement were from a 7A38-7070, as possibly was the stainless crown. The watch was fitted with a rubber dive strap that was missing its buckle.

Best I could tell, the only part of it that actually came from a 7A38-7180 was the well-worn case-back.

I was out at the time the eBay notification arrived in my email inbox, and when I looked at the listing later, I saw it had sold at 2:39 pm; the listing was only live for 15 minutes or so. It sold as a Buy-it-Now for £119.95. I presumed someone must have wanted it for the 7A38-7070's 709L dial and movement, and that would be the last I saw of it. Wrong ....

It reappeared yesterday evening, listed as a low-start auction by another UK eBay seller carl1036. He's also listed it as a 7A38-7180, but with a much shorter title.

The would-be re-seller has fitted a replacement crystal (why sapphire, FFS?) and one of those cheap 'milanese' stainless mesh straps in place of the rubber strap. Other than that my previous analysis of its component parts applies. If you're reading this and end up buying it, please promise me you'll break it up for the dial / movement. Put it in a 7A38-7070 where it belongs, or build yourself something more attractive, like this.

By late Saturday morning, the would-be re-seller had ended the listing because of an error. One of several, I'd opine. ;)

In the latter part of May, I started to notice another 'new' Japanese eBay seller listing 7A38's - ecoriola_corporation. It's difficult to ignore them, because apart from listing their items multiple times, across various domains, the astronomic prices they're asking, varying between $1650 and $2900, are just plain stupid ! They're currently listing 8 different models. 3 were new this morning. One of them caught my eye for the wrong reason. Their 7A38-7080 is a Franken ! :!:

I didn't spot it immediately, because they've deceptively swapped over the orange sweep hand. Then I noticed that the 'SPORTS 100' text was missing from the dial. Zooming in on one of their photos, revealed it's been fitted with a 722L dial (and presumably movement) from a stainless 7A38-7270 (or black chrome 7A38-7290).

If you're in any doubt what the correct 709L dial in a 7A38-7080 should look like, here's one of my recent wrist shots:

I've just spotted this crudely assembled 7A38 Franken, listed earlier this morning by a deceitful German eBay seller.

The watch case is from a two-tone 7A38-726A (fairly common in Germany), which has been fitted with the off-white 723O dial (and presumably movement) from a two-tone 7A38-7270. The hands are from something else again, which I can't quickly identify. Both the hour and minute hands are missing their lume. None of the sub-dial hands nor the sweep second hand touches their marks, which should serve as red flags.

The accessories referred to in the title are a grey 710L dial (as used in two-tone 7A38-7190 and 7A38-7280), with a random mixture of hands.

If you're unsure what the correct white 718L dial in a 7A38-726A should look like, here's a old wrist shot of one of mine.

I thought these couple of 7A38 Frankens, which came up in my eBay searches recently, warranted a quick mention here.
The first was listed on Sunday evening by a German eBay seller, with a risible opening bid price of €180 Euros and a completely ridiculous Buy-it-Now price of €260 Euros:

It comprises the watch case of a two-tone 7A38-7060, which has been fitted with the gold 701L dial, Tachymeter ring and case-back off a gold tone 7A38-7000 (hence the listing title). Topped off with a cheap brown leather strap.

The other one is something of a horror, reminiscent of the Frankens that the Filipino watch botchers used to regularly churn out. It purports to be a 7A38-702H and was listed in the early hours of this morning by a US eBay seller with a laughable Buy-it-Now price of $250. That there's no 'Make Offer' option should be enough to ward off mug punters.

First red flag is that there are no day and date windows in the 1/10s sub-dial. That gold dial is from a 7A28-6030. The hands could possibly be the original hands from the 7A38-702H, but note how far the sweep second hand is off its (12 o'clock) mark. Whether that dial means it's fitted with a 7A28 or 7A38 movement, your guess is a good as mine. :|
The battered watch case is fitted with a short non-original aftermarket bracelet, which is fitted with a clasp extender. Reading the description, I'd suspect it was partly composed using eBay's AI option, to which the seller added a couple of his own sentences. This one is typical of a dishonest semi-literate scammer:
No date which’s makes it a lot rare then the royal oak with day and date.
The seller's 98.3% positive feedback hides a plethora of critically worded negatives, as expected, for example:

A quick heads up on two more 7A38 Frankens to close out 2025. The first was listed yesterday evening, by a devious US eBay seller, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of $199. He calls it a RARE 1972 7A38-702H Prototype !
In fact, if you check the case-back photos, it's actually based on the very similar 7A38-702A. I must admit I find it oddly attractive. It appears to be well constructed. As is often the case, the bezel has been stripped of its worn gold plating, leaving the gold dummy rivets. This one is nicely executed. It's fitted with the off-white 723O dial and tachymeter ring (and presumably movement) from a two-tone 7A38-7270. The hands appear to be the original set from the 7A38-702A.

The second 7A38 Franken was listed early this morning by an Australian eBay seller. It's basically a stainless 7A38-7130, into which someone has inserted the gold 701L dial and hands (and hence presumably movement) from a gold-tone 7A38-7000. The Ozzie seller has listed it as a 7-day auction, with an opening bid price of $300 Au. with the option to Buy-it-Now for $420 Au. for anybody foolish enough.

I've just read the seller's description (belately) and saw he's written:
Only thing is the watch has a different dial color from a different model seiko from the 7A38 line because the orginal dial was damaged.. the replaced dial is still an original dial just not for this model.. everything else is good..
So fair dinkum !

By this morning, an opening bid had been placed, so it's almost assured of selling. :|
The 7-day US eBay auction for that 7A38-702A Franken 'Prototype' ended yesterday evening, selling for a whopping $530 after 21 bids. :o Checking the bidding history, I strongly suspect it was shilled. That said, the mind truly boggles !

That surprisingly successful sale appears to have provided inspiration to a would-be plagiarist. This similar-looking (but frankly rather poorly executed) 7A38 Franken was listed on eBay by a greedy dishonest German seller yesterday evening. It's a 5-day auction with a laughable opening bid price of €390 Euros with the option to Buy-it-Now for an utterly ridiculous €590 Euros !

I'm not actually 100% certain that it's based on a 7A38-702A, because there's no photo of the case-back. It could equally have once been a 7A38-702H or a two-tone 7A38-7020. Whichever, the case and (badly stretched) bracelet have been heavily refinished, in an amateurish fashion, resulting in the sharp edges of the case and bezel being rounded off. The seller has fitted the off-white Tachymeter ring and 723O dial / movement from a two-tone 7A38-7270, but in this instance retaining that watch's hands.

This unusual 7A38 Franken was listed late yesterday evening by a devious French eBay seller. Were it not for his greed, in asking a ludicrous €370 Euros as a Buy-it-Now, its subtlety might have been enough to catch out an unwary punter. Instead the price should hopefully act as a deterrent. It's a gold-tone 7A38-7280 that's been fitted with the white 710L dial (and presumably movement) from a stainless 7A38-7280, replacing the original off-white Arabic numeral 725O dial.

Note how the off-white / cream colour of the original Tachymeter ring doesn't match the purer white of the 710L dial.
Here's a couple of my unmolested examples, showing the two dials in their correct finish 7A38-7280 applications.

This fairly obvious 7A38 Franken was listed overnight by a US eBay seller. The gold-tone 7A38-7060 has been fitted with the off-white / cream arabic numeral 725O dial / hands (and presumably the movement) from a gold-tone 7A38-7280. The highly ambitious $375 Buy-it-Now asking price should be enough to deter all but the most foolhardy mug punter.

Here's how a gold-tone 7A38-7060 SAA018J looks when fitted with the correct original 708L gold dial:

The US eBay seller who concocted the gold-tone 7A38-7060 Franken in my previous post, ldalton30 has been a busy boy lately. Or should that read 'busy fool' ? in the early hours of this morning, he listed another laughably over-priced 7A38 Franken. This time it's a gold tone 7A38-7280, which has been fitted with a rather grubby white 710L dial, possibly from a stainless 7A38-7280 (or -7289). Sounds familiar ? Check out my penultimate post. Too much of a coincidence ? It looks like it may also have a problem with the day / date changeover wheel (or hands setting), because the date is halfway though changing @ 7:20. :!:

This got me thinking. The off-white arabic number 725O dial that he fitted into the gold-tone 7A38-7060 likely came from this gold-tone 7A38-7280. But how to prove it ? Easy as it turns out. 8-)

At the beginning of May he'd listed a gold-tone 7A38-7280 fitted with the correct off-white arabic number 725O dial:

Note that it has been ended as No Longer Available (at least in that particular configuration evidently). But if you check the photos showing case-back serial numbers in the two listings ....

.... you'll see it's the same gold-tone 7A38-7280, case-back serial number 8N0430, albeit now amateurishly frankened.

Caught in the act. Banged to rights. Case proven M'Lud. 8-)

Well that's a fairly satisfying outcome. Both listings have been ended by the seller as no longer available.

As a postscript to my previous couple of posts about the frankened gold-tone 7A38-7280, I notice the US eBay seller ldalton30 has now re-listed the watch in its correct original configuration, at a somewhat reduced Buy-it-Now price.

The listing included a fresh set of photos, but it's the same case-back serial number 8N0430. ;)
