NOS 7A38-6000 SAA039J as an investment ? @ €4K ??

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Everybody loves a 'Baby Panda', right ? ❤ 🐼 ❤ Thing is, attractive as it may be, the 7A38-6000 SAA039J, with its light silvery grey dial and dark blue sub-dials, isn't really a true ('black and white') panda at all. Its comparatively diminutive 37mm diameter (for a 7A38 diver) also means it wears small. Nevertheless it remains enduringly popular with collectors.

Almost 10 years ago to the day, I started a dedicated 7A38-xxx model specific thread for this variant on the old forum:
7A38-6000 SAA039J - Stainless small size 'Diver / Panda'. I maintained it religiously and it ultimately ran for 9 years to some 14 pages and more than 270 posts. It encompassed everything from poor well-worn barely recognisable beaters to NOS condition examples. If you didn't follow it in the past, may I suggest that you read through the last few pages, starting at page 11, which will give a good idea of where prices are heading and the reasons why.

Although the 7A38-6000 SAA039J was nominally a worldwide export model, a good proportion of NOS examples continue to turn up on eBay Italy. Italian eBay sellers have frequently asked ridiculously inflated prices for them. Indeed one such was asking $1500 as far back as July 2012 (it eventually sold 6 months later in January 2013 for a more realistic $600).

Over the last year or so, one Italian eBay seller has done more to inflate prices of this particular 7A38 variant than any of his greedy predecessors. He calls himself a 'collector' but from his actions, including some blatantly shilled auctions, he's clearly just another dealer / speculator out to make a fast buck - and indeed lots of them. I am of course referring to oysterdelarge727 (and his various other eBay aliases), a.k.a. Giuseppe. Here's a recent partial quote from a parallel related thread in the 7A28 model section:
Seiko7A38 wrote: Wed Feb 02, 2022 11:12 amI had intended to write something about these last month, but workload / other important priorities took precedence. Greedy Italian eBay seller oysterdelarge727 (a.k.a. Giuseppe) has long since usurped the dubious honour of undisputed 'King of the Crazy Prices' from Alberto Ulmi.
He now also holds the additional distinction of offering the most ludicrously over-priced Seiko 7Axx, by a considerable margin, listed anywhere on eBay worldwide.

Last night, Italian eBay seller oysterdelarge727 listed this NOS example of a 7A38-6000 SAA039J, with an absolutely eye-wateringly ridiculous Buy-it-Now price of 4000 Euros !! Note the wording of the title. According to Giuseppe, this isn't just a common or garden 'grail' nor 'Holy Grail', but a 'Very Holy Grail'. Supposedly 'Unique in the World' too.

I've only uploaded half of the dozen listing photos, but they're more than sufficient to show that it is indeed a very nice genuine NOS condition example. However, apart from the plastic SQ hang tag, which is missing the sales code section, all the other accessories included with it are what Giuseppe typically uses to give the illusion of being a 'full set'.

His glowing description, full of the usual half-truths is good for a few laughs, especially the sentences he duplicated:

The 7A38-6000 SAA039J isn't rare by any stretch of the imagination. The knack is finding yourself a decent example, with minimal damage to the irreplaceable metallic blue bezel insert, still fitted with the original Seiko p/n G1157S bracelet, for a reasonable price. There are quite a few other NOS examples out there in other collectors' hands. One that immediately springs to mind is that belonging to Danish / Norwegian collector Stian. Simply because it is such a nice example, probably in slightly better NOS condition than Giuseppe's, I'd taken the liberty of uploading a few of Stian's Instagram photos to the old forum's 7A38-6000 thread, from page 11 onwards. Here's just one of them ....

Stian must have seen Giuseppe's eBay listing, because at the weekend, presumably in response and to assert his position he posted this on Instagram to instant acclaim. ;)

Giuseppe's inclusion of that second duplicated sentence in his description (which I'd underlined in red earlier), regarding investment potential, rightfully serves to shoot himself in the foot.

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Feb2022-Giuseppe-Description-Investment.png

If you want to see prices in recent years, where better place to look than the last few pages of that old archived forum thread ? Which is why I suggested to start reading around page 11. ;) Halfway down page 13, you will also find the full versions of these couple of partial posts:

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Nov2020-OldForum-Post-1.png

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Nov2020-OldForum-Post-2.png (89 KiB) Viewed 12681 times

As they were all very similar and small, I won't bother re-posting the photos from that eBay listing (you can view them in the old forum thread) - apart from this one of that particular NOS 7A38-6000's case-back. Note the serial number:

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Nov2020-11.jpg
7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Nov2020-11.jpg (79.84 KiB) Viewed 12680 times

Yes, it's the very same watch, serial number 403615, that Giuseppe is now asking 4000 Euros for !! :o

rsz_7a38-6000-divers-stainless-pandaface-ebay-feb2022-11-rotated.jpg
rsz_7a38-6000-divers-stainless-pandaface-ebay-feb2022-11-rotated.jpg (244.02 KiB) Viewed 12676 times

So it looks like he's trying to cash on his comparatively short term investment - to the tune of something like 300% !! :!:

It's also worth reading right to the bottom of page 13 of the old archived forum's 7A38-6000 SAA039J thread to see the full extent of the other price-hiking antics that Giuseppe got up to in late 2020 / early 2021, after he'd bought that NOS example, including some pretty blatant shill bidding of auctions for other lesser examples he'd previously acquired. :!:

One last snippet for the time being. I came across this photo of Giuseppe's 7Axx collection (as it was a year ago), which he uses as the header on his Seiko 7Axx Facebook group. Note the 3 watches I've outlined in red in the top L.H. corner.

Sandwiched between the NOS JDM 7A28-7050 and 7A28-7100 (which I wrote about last week, in this other thread), is what I believe to be the 7A38-6000, subject of this thread. The bracelet is being tensioned by the cushion. From the reflection it appears that the bracelet's first joining link on the 6 o'clock side is slightly twisted (not an uncommon problem). He has been careful to conceal this flaw in most of his eBay listing photos apart from this side-on view:

I'm scratching my head in bewilderment and disbelief at the moment. Giuseppe's ludicrously over-priced 'Very Holy Grail' NOS 7A38-6000 SAA039J 'Panda' appears to have sold in the early hours of this morning for an undisclosed best offer. :|

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384714924681

WatchCount.com's Look-up tool shows there had been plenty of interest over the last 5 days:

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Feb2022-WatchCount.png
7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Feb2022-WatchCount.png (78.55 KiB) Viewed 12629 times

The eBay Purchase History shows an offer made by encrypted ID of s***8 ....

7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Feb2022-PurchaseHistory.png
7A38-6000-(Divers)-Stainless-PandaFace-eBay-Feb2022-PurchaseHistory.png (51.63 KiB) Viewed 12629 times

However it's noteworthy that offer was made on Thursday 8th @ 08:16 am, but not accepted until another 16 hours later at 10 minutes past Midnight. I can't comprehend anybody in their right mind paying anything like his ludicrous asking price. Maybe I'm being more cynical that usual, but I'm beginning to wonder if this was another of Giuseppe's devious shenanigans. Could that 'mystery buyer' who made the offer have been his primary eBay ID oysterdelarge728 ?

Turns out my skepticism was well founded. Giuseppe's NOS 7A38-6000 'Very Holy Grail' is back on eBay again, re-listed in the early hours of this morning. The 12 photos are the same, as are the title and description. The only significant change is that he's increased the previous absolutely ridiculous Buy-it-Now price from €4000 to €5000 Euros !!

It seems some people are still prepared to pay what I'd personally consider 'silly money' for the privilege of owning a 7A38-6000, although nothing like as ridiculous as Giuseppe's latest ludicrous asking price. This supposedly 'near mint' example was listed this morning by a Spanish eBay seller, with a typically ambitious Buy-it-Now price of €1550 Euros.

A week later, that same almost mint 7A38-6000 rocked up on Instagram, posted by passion_cars_watches yesterday.

After he'd confirmed it was the same watch, I asked Spyros if he'd mind divulging how much he actually paid for it, as a best offer. He replied €1000, somewhat less than the Spanish eBay seller's over-ambitious Buy-it-Now price of €1550. 👍

I happened to look at Giuseppe's eBay listing for his still ludicrously over-priced NOS 7A38-6000 this morning and noticed something slightly different from the screen print in my previous post.

10 days ago, he revised the listing, increasing the Buy-it-Now price from the 'reduced' €3990 to €4000 Euros. It's not as if anybody in their right mind would ever consider paying anything like that, in the first place. But an extra €10 Euros ??? Truly pathetic.

I was prompted to check it because yesterday evening, Giuseppe listed another 'Very Holy Grail' 7A38-6000 with a lower, but still typically over-ambitious (read unrealistic) Buy-it-Now price of €1590 Euros.

He's given it a condition rating 'New with Tags', which this example clearly isn't. You don't need to study his photos too closely, to see that it's well used. The bezel inlay has a number of scratches and dings; the sides of the watch case and case-back appear to have been polished and the clasp has been re-brushed.

To my incredulity, he's somehow managed to pull it off once again. That latest 'Very Holy Grail' 7A38-6000, in no better than average used condition, sold in the early hours of this morning, for a reduced Buy-it-Now price of €1450 Euros.

Note that he'd revised the listing, changing the condition from 'New with Tags' to 'Used' and reducing the Buy-it-Now price at the same time, @ 02:11 BST - less than 10 minutes before it sold.

Checking the listing on Chrono24.it shows he has arbitrarily reduced the price again, by another 1000 Euros, to € 2999, so presumably his eBay listing will follow suit in due course.

As I'd predicted, in the early hours of this morning, Giuseppe ended his latest eBay re-listing for his NOS 7A38-6000, because of yet another unforced error.

It was back, re-listed 2 minutes later, with the Buy-it-Now price reduced to a marginally less ridiculous €2999 Euros.

The 12 photos in the re-listing are exactly the same set he used in the first week of February. He's just shuffled their order, making a different one (which I'd uploaded to a previous post) the primary image. The fact that he's just wiped €2K Euros off his asking price in the first half of May aptly demonstrates what a complete and utter chancer he is.

Giuseppe ended the above re-listing for his NOS 7A38-6000 'Very Holy Grail' again this morning, this time because it was allegedly no longer available, rather than because of yet another unforced error. It had lasted 2½ weeks.

Needless to say it was back on eBay again, re-listed just over a minute later.

This time he's reduced the still ridiculous Buy-it-Now price to €2499 Euros - half what he was asking 7½ weeks ago. Needless to say, the same 12 photos were given the usual obligatory shuffling, reverting to the previous primary image.

At the risk of repeating myself, Giuseppe ended his latest re-listing for his NOS 7A38-6000 'Very Holy Grail' once again in the early hours of this morning, because it was allegedly no longer available.

He may actually have found a buyer this time, because his parallel Chrono24 re-listing is now showing as 'reserved'.

Meanwhile, the price-hiking madness continues unabated elsewhere. Late yesterday evening, one of the regular would-be profiteering Japanese cross-platform 'proxy' re-sellers japan_pre-owned_vintage listed this no better than average worn condition 7A38-6000, with a typically ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of $5031.

Overnight, they went on to list it another 5 times, in parallel, across various other eBay domains. I'm a little frustrated at the moment. As I tried to explain last year, in this thread in the eBay section, these Japanese cross-platform 'proxy' re-sellers usually don't own the items they are offering for sale. They wait until they've snared a mug punter buyer and then purchase it from the original bona fide seller and pocket the difference for a quick profit. Highly unethical, but clearly not illegal in Japan. Normally such instances are easly to prove, by finding the original seller's listing on Amazon.jp Mercari.jp, Rakuten or Yahoo Japan auctions. Unfortunately I've so far failed to locate this one.

Although I haven't found their source, I know I'm right about this one, because this morning it was also listed by another slightly less prolific Japanese cross-platform 'proxy' re-seller japan.premium.shop with a marginally less ludicrous asking price of $4700. They've used the same primary image, but cropped the Kanji text off the RH side.

The greed and stupidity surrounding the 7A38-6000 SAA039J continues abated. Late yesterday evening, another deluded Italian eBay seller listed this no better than average worn example with a ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of €2190 Euros.
As for the 'Paul Newman Dial' keyword spamming, if nothing else, it shows he has a vivid sense of imagination.

According to the seller's description, it's supposed to be 'In ottime condizioni ....'. Yeah, right.
