How much is a 'NOS' 7A38-6010 SAA040J really worth ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Late in the evening of 19th September, Italian eBay seller oysterdelarge727 listed a 'NOS' 7A38-6010 SAA040J with a typically ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of 850 Euros. He ended it just short of a week later, in his customary manner, because of an error - presumably in the over-ambitious pricing.

It was admittedly in very nice almost mint condition, but hardly worth anything like his risible 850 Euros asking price.

What I found incredible (and quite disgusting) was that he also uploaded half a dozen photos of it in that much re-used Seiko presentation box, that is still full of dead skin flakes.

Three days later, for good measure (and more visibility) he'd also listed it in parallel on the Italian classified site Subito.

Bearing in mind what I'd written fairly recently, in this other thread, which documents his earlier shill bidding activity:

He took me slightly by surprise a week ago today, when instead of re-listing it as another Buy-it-Now listing, with a slightly reduced price, instead he reverted back and re-listed it as a 7-day auction, with an opening price of 1 Euro.

Earlier this morning, with only 8 hours of the auction remaining, the bidding had stalled at just 251 Euros. In fact it had earlier reached 253 Euros, but the high bidder had subsequently retracted their bid.

The auction ended a few moments ago, with the bidding jumping from 351 Euros to 651 Euros in the final seconds ! :o

For that reason, the eBay Bidding History warrants closer scrutiny.

The losing bidder with a feedback of 75, who bid 649 Euros with less than 5 minutes remaining, has 100% bidding activity with this seller, clearly pointing to their being a shill. Depending which screen you're viewing, eBay gives different encrypted ID's: 8***3 or 6***r (which is a much better clue as to their true identity).

As expected, it's another of Giuseppe's multiple eBay ID's and previously proven shill bidding accomplice: russell_06.

This gets more hilarious by the minute. I must admit, it didn't click straight away, because Giuseppe (currently using oysterdelarge727) doesn't use his primary eBay ID oysterdelarge728 to list 7Axx's very often; certainly not recently.

Note the feedback number - 644 - the same as the winning bidder !!

So not only was he the losing shill bidder @ 649 Euros, but also the winning bidder @ 651 Euros and thus managed, by his greed and gross incompetence, to literally out-shill himself !!

The next highest losing bidder had only bid 330 Euros and as I'd opine the watch is realistically worth more than that, I doubt very much that they'll be receiving a second chance offer for coming in a lowly third place. Presumably, it's been returned to its slot in Giuseppe's diminishing 7Axx collection box for the time being (third from right in bottom row):

Incidentally, at the time of writing, that Subito listing is still live.

This isn't really meant as a comparison, but I know exactly what a NOS 7A38-6010 SAA040J is worth, because I bought one myself, back in February 2012. I won it, against strong and legitimate bidding competition, in a US eBay auction which ended in the early hours of the morning of 31st January. It was genuinely unworn, NOS with tags in the original Seiko presentation box. I paid $361 for it. I'd almost forgotten I'd created a separate thread for it on the old forum:
My (literally) newest incoming Seiko 7A38 - painfully slow reveal. Here's a few of the photos from that thread:

Hard to credit just how brazen Giuseppe can be.
He's since had the audacity to leave himself an unworded positive feedback for winning his own shilled auction !

With hindsight, I probably should have added this latest fiasco to his dedicated shill bidding thread in the eBay section.

Presumably that NOS 7A38-6010 did sell at some point, but for how much exactly will likely forever remain a mystery. It re-appeared on eBay early yesterday evening, listed by another Italian seller chimera452, who's asking €1100 Euros as a Buy-it-Now, with the option to make a (much lower sensible) offer.

I'm positive it's the same watch, because not only is the case-back serial number 6N0413 clearly visible, but 9 of the 11 photos used by this re-seller (showing the day/date SUN19) are the same as Giuseppe Macri (A.K.A. oysterdelarge727) used in his original eBay listings in September and October 2021. There is one small difference and that's the photos are watermarked Chrono24.com, so conceivably that was the alternative route it sold by. The other two hand held photos, which I hadn't seen before, are dated a week later SUN26 and also watermarked Chrono24.com.
