Another stupidly over-priced 7A38-7140 SAA051J on eBay Italy

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Although it irked me from the moment I'd first seen it, I initially resolved not to mention it, so as not to be accused of constantly criticizing or singling out Italian eBay sellers. On 19th July, seller autleaf listed this NOS 7A38-7140 SAA051J with a typically Italian ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of 1400 Euros - probably double what it's worth in real world terms.

Has to be said, the composition of some of the photos were a little strange, particularly the zoomed in close-up shots, one of which the seller chose to use as his primary image. These are the two which really matter, showing the watch is definitely NOS. I had a quick look through my photo folders and that case-back serial # 580064 isn't one I'd seen before.

After a couple of days, the seller revised the listing, replacing some of the photos. Here's one of his 3 later additions:

Having also subsequently reduced the Buy-it-Now by a mere 20 Euros, yesterday evening, the Italian eBay seller ended the listing in the time-honoured fashion as allegedly no longer available.

He re-listed it just 50 minutes later.

More than half the photos had been replaced this time. Again, his choice of primary image possibly wasn't the best. :|

That re-listing lasted less than 4 hours, before he ended it yesterday evening, again as allegedly no longer available.

It came as no surprise to me, when the Italian eBay seller re-listed it once again this morning, with the Buy-it-Now price increased to 1430 Euros.

After making two revisions to that previous re-listing at the beginning of August, by which he'd reduced the Buy-it-Now price from the original ludicrous 1430 Euros to a marginally less ridiculous 1200 Euros, the Italian eBay seller ended the listing in the time honoured manner as allegedly no longer available, which as often the case, was evidently untrue.

But sometimes these things have got to be said (over and over, apparently). A matter of 3 minutes later, deluded Italian eBay seller autleaf had re-listed his NOS 7A38-7140 as a 7-day auction, with the opening bid price reduced to 1190 Euros, shipping cost reduced to a nominal 1 Euro and with the option to make an offer:

A week later, he re-listed it again as another 7-day auction, further reducing the opening bid price to 1090 Euros:

Not exactly surprisingly, that re-listing ended earlier this morning without any bids placed and the watch still unsold. Instead of continuing in what most people would consider the sensible direction, this morning, the Italian eBay seller has re-listed it once again, but with the opening bid price increased back up to 1300 Euros !!

There's still the option to make an offer. So out of devilment, I decided it was about time I gave him a reality check. I sent him a deliberately lowball offer of 130 Euros. He responded with a counter-offer of 1299 Euros, so continuing the 'move the decimal point game' I countered with 12.99 Euros. He appears to have cottoned on. This was his last counter.

After that, I sent him an eBay message, including a link to this thread. During our brief exchange he stated that he had already declined an offer of 800 Euros. I told him I thought he was a bloody fool for doing so, to which he responded:
thank you for telling me this, and this is my business,I do not regret it, and thank you again for reminding me.
So there you have it.
