NOS 7A38-7060 SAA015J asking 1500 Euros - Seriously ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I suppose I should briefly mention this, for no other reason, than it currently holds the dubious distinction of being the most expensive Seiko 7A38 listed on eBay worldwide, with a ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of 1500 Euros. It was listed yesterday morning by Italian eBay seller oysterdelarge727, which is one of the multiple user ID's belonging to Italian 7Axx collector Giuseppe M.

Scrolling through his photos raised a smile. Giuseppe evidently suffers from dry skin. Until recently, in the majority of his photos he'd taken to wearing black microfibre gloves. That blue Seiko Quartz presentation box, which I'm sure is the same one he's used in number of previous eBay listings, is full of dust and dead skin particles (see second photo). That blank paper Seiko tag (or an identical one) has also made numerous prior appearances. But that's what it's all about: appearance. Attempting to give the illusion of a full set. If it truly were one, it should of course include one of these:

I suppose I should be grateful to Giuseppe (and his ilk) for his tireless efforts to over-inflate the prices of Seiko 7A38's. Thanks primarily to him, my collection (which incidentally includes 2 NOS condition stainless 7A38-7060 SAA015J's) is theoretically worth three times as much as it was a year ago !

Belated Postscript: That initial listing lasted less than a week and was ended in the usual predictable manner.

It's been a good while since I acquired my stainless 7A38-7060 SAA015J's, two of which are mint / NOS condition. Over 10 years in fact. Checking my records, I purchased the most recent example off eBay Germany, winning an auction on 14th March 2011 (item # 170612635081) for 82 Euros. Sorry, I didn't keep screenshot of the ended listing summary. :( But this was the Austrian eBay seller's single small listing photo. Not much to go on, eh ?

By some deft searching of my old emails, I did manage to find the Austrian seller's eBay invoice with shipping added.

According to my spreadsheet that total price of €95.50, (which I paid by mailing Cash Euros) converted to £101.50. :)
UK inflation has averaged 2.5% over the last 10 years, which would theoretically increase that figure to just £127. But as we know to our cost, Seiko 7Axx prices have soared well above inflation rates. Comparing mine to Giuseppe's ludicrous asking price of 1500 Euros, I reckon it's easily got to be worth €1000 - 10 times what I paid for it in 2011. :P

I hadn't bothered mentioning it before (in this thread), but a week ago Italian eBay seller oysterdelarge727 (Giuseppe) had repeated his regular shenanigan of ending his current batch of listings as allegedly no longer available and re-listing them almost immediately. The stainless 7A38-7060 subsequently reappeared with the Buy-it-Now price reduced from his initial ridiculous 1500 Euros to 1200 Euros.

He pulled the same stunt again earlier this morning, ending the listing because of an error (presumably in the pricing).

Two minutes later, it was back on eBay, re-listed again, with the Buy-it-Now price now reduced to 'only' 999 Euros.

Re: Another stupidly over-priced 7A28-7020 'James Bond' on eBay

Why do the sellers end/restart their ads like this? Is it to fool any potential buyers that an item hasn't been too long unsold? I mean it only takes minor search skills to filter out this behavior.

Well he fooled you on this occasion, Dave - because you'd posted it in the wrong thread (per the title of your post). I'm guessing it was his keyword spamming that confused you and this is where you meant to post it, so I've moved it. ;) To answer your question, basically Yes. :x

Devious eBay sellers like Giuseppe (though he's certainly far from alone in using this particular shenanigan) regularly end their listings (either because of a supposed error, or that it's allegedly no longer available) and almost immediately turn round and re-list it. This has the effect of bringing their listing to the top of any search results, assuming that like myself and most people, you search on 'Newly Listed' in descending order. It also flags the item for two days as 'Newly Listed', so inexperienced eBayers (mug punters) may think the item is actually a new appearance. Some of the smarter ones also shuffle the order of their photos (changing the primary image) to add to the confusion. Also, since last year, eBay started automatically deleting all ended listings after 60 days, so employing this devious tactic makes it almost impossible to check up on items that have been kicking around unsold for months (or sometimes even years) on end.

Frankly it's a pain in the arse - and partly responsible for the reason I'm always bouncing off my eBay 'maximum number of watched items' limit (currently close to 400). So each time they pull this stunt, as Giuseppe did earlier this morning with all 6 of his current listings (as oysterdelarge727) I have to delete the previously ended items from my watching page. I don't know if you'd sussed it, but he also did the same thing with the two 7A28's he'd first listed in the early hours of this morning. They, being 384342250759 and 384342258098 had lasted just over 7½ hours each, FFS !

Anyway, as far as his stainless 7A38-7060 (NOT 'James Bond') is concerned, at least he's headed in the right direction.

Was originally asking a ludicrous 1500 Euros: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384255652613

Re-listed 7 minutes later, around mid-morning, with the Buy-it-Now price further reduced to 'only' 800 Euros.

I guess he'll get there in the end - unless some mug punter with more money than sense jumps in too soon. :|

I guess it's time to finally draw a line under this fiasco.

Not exactly a surprise, that previous re-listing was ended at the beginning of the month, because of another error.

Giuseppe re-listed it again almost immediately, with the Buy-it-Now price further reduced from 800 to 650 Euros, but now without the distinctly unhygienic Seiko presentation box - although he re-used exactly the same set of photos, complete with his scabby DNA evidence (per my earlier observation).

I didn't bother taking yet another screen print of that latest re-listing. Apart from the title, price and a minor revision to the description he made on 22nd September, it was virtually identical to all the previous listings. I just added it to my eBay watching page. I had noticed that he'd ended it on Friday evening, again as allegedly no longer available.

He hasn't re-listed it over the weekend, so presumably this time it's been sold off eBay for somewhat less than 650 Euros - a far cry from his original ludicrous Buy-it-Now asking price of 1500 Euros.
