Another 'NOS' 7A38-7140 SAA051J listed on eBay Italy

Post by Seiko7A38 »

This 7A38-7140 in decent little worn, well cared for condition, but certainly not 'NOS', was listed by an Italian eBay seller this morning, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 1 Euro. There's no JWCII case-back sticker, nor any evidence of box or tags shown in the seller's photos. There's what appears to be loss of black coating (through wear) on the inside of one bracelet link, shown in the last photo. The p/n B1356F bracelet is very short; most of the adjustment links having been removed. I can only see 2 present (one either side of the clasp), meaning that 6 are missing. :(

I'm just a bemused observer. This is Italy (hence the usual 'Giugiaro Design' fallacy). So will the auction be blatantly shilled all the way, in the best Italian tradition, or will it be ended early, as allegedly no longer available ? :?

The 7-day Italian eBay auction for that allegedly 'NOS' 7A38-7140, with a very short bracelet, ended a few moments ago, selling for 256 Euros after 24 bids. It may possibly have been shilled up to 200 Euros, by one bidder who placed 10 of the 24 total bids, but nothing like as blatantly as some Italian eBay auctions. Amusingly, the final two snipe bidders both bid the same 256 Euros in the closing 10 seconds of the auction; the earlier of the two taking the win.

I was wondering where I might have seen that 7A38-7140 before; its case-back serial number 550149 didn't immediately ring any bells, but checking back through my photo folders, it was previously listed and sold on Subito in October 2020.

Unless they happen to have very small wrists, I wish whoever bought it the best of luck sourcing the missing bracelet adjustment links. It reminded me of an unpleasant incident from the old forum's 7A38-7140 SAA051J model thread.

Scroll down towards the bottom of the linked page 4 of that thread to read how, having won the auction, I was cheated out of them by the dishonest Australian eBay seller. That said, thankfully I've never actually needed one, let alone 6. :)

So most likely I can't find extra links from anywhere for my too short bracelet.
You have any tips for nice aftermarket bracelet? The end link is so strange.
Or can I just buy whatever black bracelet and take the normal end part away and use it to my 7A38-7140?
Does it work like that?

You didn't say, but I'm assuming you bought the 7A38-7140 with short bracelet, subject of this thread, off eBay Italy ? :|
Sorry, I don't have any simple solution for you. As you have correctly surmised, adjustment links are like rocking horse droppings. Those 6 that I was cheated out of purchasing by the Australian eBay seller are the only ones I've ever seen. Even if a single link came up for sale on eBay, judging by the prices asked for other links by some Italian eBay sellers, you're probably looking @ 50 Euros apiece. I'm not aware of any suitable alternative replacement bracelet. If you read through the old forum's 7A38-7140 SAA051J model thread, you'll find a few examples where owners have fitted a variety of notched straps, in leather, rubber, etc.. However, their fixings, using screw bars, are tenuous at best.

I got my 7A38-7140 out to check and do a bit of measuring. Each bracelet link measures approx 5.0mm wide. So I'd estimate the maximum wrist size of your watch / bracelet must be around 165mm. How much bigger is your wrist ?

I would not recommend replacing your watch's bracelet. Doing so will not only detract from the original aesthetic, but potentially devalue it. Keep it and extend it by using one (or two) 16mm clasp extenders, like these listed on eBay.

Cousins-ClaspExtenders.jpg
Cousins-ClaspExtenders.jpg (21.39 KiB) Viewed 8177 times

They're also available (rather cheaper) from Cousins UK. Cousins also offer them in gold plated finish, but I've not been able to find anybody who supplies them in matt black. :( If you look on this as a permanent solution, you might want to consider having the clasp extenders professionally coated: either anodized, black chrome plated or even DLC coated. The last option certainly won't be cheap. Otherwise get yourself a $10 aerosol spray can from a car accessory shop.

First of all I have to say thanks for all the efforts you have made with 7A38-7140 model market investigation. Keep listing auctions and sales ads and also doing your own 'Sherlock Holmes' thing with re-listed watches and buyers.
I've been reading all your posts many times but now finally I decided to register and post something myself.

Actually I had never heard of 7A38-7140 model until I saw one last winter in smaller auction in Norway.
I just loved the colorful 80's look in the watch. Didn't know it was rare (until I googled it). Just thought it looked cool and wanted it to my collection. I do have few years old Datejust for everyday use. I have some rare launch year Oris Star Divers watch from 1965 but I also have some cheaper watches. Unique NOS condition BWC, Some cool Poljots etc.. So what Im saying its not about the value of the watch. Its only what you like. I'd rather use 100 euros unique Poljot Diver than diamond filled rose gold Audemars only because its expensive...

But about Norwegian auction. They did sell a lot of watches in there. Mainly old 33-35mm vintage watches (Omega Roamer etc.. ) nothing special, rare or expensive. But there was lots of them. Over 100 pcs. I assume they got them from someone's collection who had passed away. As usual in smaller countryside auctions there was only " Seiko Chronograph " as title. No measurements, no ref., mention of working, no extra pictures. Just one average picture from the front. But this how I have found all my "pearls" of my collection. With a gamble.
Condition? Well it's not NOS but I'd say quite close to that. Just some small wear in few corners etc. If the sh1ttiest watches youve linked in here are 2/10 and the NOS watches are 10/10 I'd say this is 8/10. Good bargain for 150 euros.
But can't wear it 'cause the bracelet it too tight. And the original clasp is already adjusted to the longest holes.
As you wrote seems that I will not find any extra links for it so I do have to start considering some replacement bracelets from aftermarkets.

If and when I have to replace the original bracelet I will definitely not sell it. I will keep it and add it back if I decide to sell it on some day. So I do understand value of original bracelet but I have no fun of the original because I can't use it.

So question was that can I fit regular bracelet in this watch ? As you know usually watches have female part and bracelets have male part but in 7A38-7140 is opposite. Watch has male part and bracelet needs to have female part.

I was thinking can I buy regular bracelet like this?

https://www.watches88.com/pd-seiko-22mm ... -black.cfm

And just delete the end parts so male part will turn to be female part. Would it work like that?

PS. Sorry about my typos and spelling mistakes.

OK. Thanks for clarifying that (seems you didn't in fact).

Perhaps you could post a photo of your watch - or a link to the ended auction listing (if it's still accessible online). ;)

But you can possibly use it, by adding one or more clasp extenders (and spray painting them black) as I suggested in my previous reply. This could actually be the simplest and cheapest solution !

If you insist on going down that route, then Yes it can be done. I'm not sure whether you have also read the old forum's stainless 7A38-7140 SAA047J thread, but on page 2, to use your expression, there is one of the sh!ttiest examples of a 7A38-7140 (black chrome or stainless) that I have ever seen.

You could, but if you're going to modify the ends, I'd look for a cheaper solution. The bracelet you've linked costs $139. I'd suggest looking for another matt black 22mm bracelet with straight end tubes (here's a cheap one) and then carefully dremel and file the middle to suit the watch case's 6mm wide lug 'protuberance' (seen here on my stainless 7A38-7140).

I have to return to clasp matter again because I just don't get your point. There is clasp in original bracelet.
So you propose to purchase bigger/longer clasp to replace the original and get the extra length this way?
I try to post a picture of it.
PS. I do also have a nice Seiko Pogue in my humble and small collection

No. Please go back and read my post again properly. I am suggesting you purchase a 16mm clasp extender (or two). When I purchased my first 7A38-7110 (from Japan), the bracelet was too short. I fitted a (18mm) clasp extender as a temporary solution. Here are a few photos from that thread (scroll down), which should hopefully be self-explanatory:

I usually search Reddit Watch Exchange once a week, but forgot to last weekend. When I did so belatedly, this morning, I spotted this FS advert for a familiar 7A38-7140 with a short bracelet, posted on 5th November by user Accord1226.

Definitely the same watch (as per my original post) - the case-back serial number 550149 matches. Looks like he's given up hope of finding any more bracelet adjustment links or trying my suggestion of a clasp extender. As stated earlier, It's certainly not 'NOS' (as claimed by the original Italian eBay seller) and apart from the short bracelet issue, would benefit from a replacement crystal. Given the condition and previous eBay selling price of 256 Euros in May this year, I'd opine that his asking price of $550 is probably a shade over-optimistic.

The other 7A38-7140 with a short bracelet, serial number 550149 continues to do the rounds. Last week German dealer ticctacc posted this rather tacky 'incoming' announcement on Instagram.

Yesterday they deleted it and replaced it with this more direct For Sale post:

They've also uploaded a shaky hand-held 15-second video here. There's no mention of the length of the bracelet and their asking price is 799 Euros - more than 3 times the price the same watch sold for on eBay in May ! :o

Would-be profiteering German Instagram watch dealer ticctacc evidently hasn't received much interest in their grossly over-priced 7A38-7140. So at lunchtime today, they listed it on eBay using the same 5 photos, with a risible Buy-it-Now price of 875 Euros. There's still no disclosure of the very short bracelet in their description !
