Nice 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 on eBay, but £1250 seriously ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I probably should rightfully be composing this thread in the eBay forum section, where on the old forum I had slavishly maintained The 7A28-7120 RAF Gen 1 PriceWatch thread for 7½ years between July 2013 ending in January 2021. I'll reiterate that I have absolutely no intention of resurrecting that thread, but sometimes one has to make an exception.

This exceptionally good condition 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 was listed earlier this evening, by a UK eBay seller, with an equally exceptional Buy-it-Now price of £1250 - without any option to make an offer. Can't afford it at the moment ? :( Well you can even buy it 'on tick' for £59 per month over two years if you're skint or foolish enough to consider it !

For your consideration, one of the most legendary watches of all time, the calibre 7128.
Made famous by being supplied by Seiko to the British armed forces in the 1980s.
Here are the meanings of the markers on the caseback (the serial number is partially obstructed for the purposes here):
6645 = Time Measuring Instruments / 99 = NATO Country code United Kingdom / 768-3056 = individual part number
The watch is in IMMACULATE CONDITION. Most examples you may see on eBay have been put through hell. This hasn’t got a mark on it anywhere. No dreaded strap burn on the reverse. No brutal dings on the casing. The crystal just shines. 1984 edition examples are extremely rare. Whoever the pilot was that had this watch, probably never used it.
Perfectly functioning, the chronograph starts and stops fine, the hands all reset to zero without issue. Reliability all round.
Comes on a green nato strap as pictured.
I would say it is the best example I’ve ever seen, anywhere in the world. The price reflects this.
Photos are of the actual item and form an integral part of the description so please study them carefully. [1st photo is stock image, all others are the watch itself.]
The battery was changed last year so should still be strong. No service history, but has all metal parts which can be easily serviced by any competent watch person. This is not your typical throwaway quartz. It was built to the highest standards.
One of 2 military pieces I am currently in the process of selling to stabilize the collection. I must have bought this piece nearly 10 years ago.
Don’t let this opportunity pass. It won’t be seen again.
Paypal only.
I've only bothered uploading 2 of the seller's 9 frankly rather amateurish letterbox format photos, presumably taken on his camera phone. I've also copied the second half of his description into a quote box, because it was too spaced out to take a screenshot. He's oddly only obscured the last 2 digits of the MOD 09xx / 84 issue number and carelessly omitted to do anything about the Seiko case-back serial # 483012. Oops !!

Thing is, whereas the 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 holds little personal interest for me, I have an extremely good memory for exceptional examples and I do specifically remember posting about this particular watch, which previously appeared listed on eBay UK, not quite nearly 10 years ago, as the current seller claims, but rather closer to 5 years ago, at the end of March 2016. You can find my original post at the bottom of page 19 and result at the top of page 20 of the old forum's 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 PriceWatch thread. 8-)

It sold a week later for £696 - a tidy sum for one of these back in April 2016.

I wasn't in any doubt that there'd be someone out there willing to pay his hefty asking price. That exceptional condition 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 appears to have sold late last night for the £1250 Buy-it-Now price.

Not a bad investment. Ignoring eBay fees and commission, that gives him a profit of £544, which calculates out as a ROI of just under 80% over 5 years (approx. 12% p.a. annualized).

Speaking of exceptional examples reminded me of this NOS condition 7A28-7120 RAF Gen. 1 which I posted about (at greater length) on the first page of the old forum's The 7A28-7120 RAF Gen 1 PriceWatch thread back in July 2013.

Makes one wonder what exceptional price that almost perfect example might achieve in today's marketplace. :?

I sold one, freshly serviced and on a new NATO strap, two months ago to a friend in Canada for £750
