Finally identified a non-original replacement Seiko bracelet

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I bought three of these NOS Seiko p/n Z1020S stainless bracelets way back in 2011, from both Thai and UK eBay sellers:

I'd originally purchased them with the intention of using them as a 'substitute' on stainless 7A38-7020 / -7029's, in lieu of the correct original Seiko p/n B1171S bracelet. IIRC, I was short of at least one at the time, but later managed to buy a couple of those, also NOS, which remedied the deficit. I subsequently ended up using a couple of the Z1020S bracelets on my 7A38-702x frankens, where their fitment seemed more appropriate. This was the first such (since modded):

The 10mm lug fitting; method of attachment, widest end link width of 23mm and 'dummy rivet' motif make it an almost a perfect match for the 7A38-702x watch case.

When I posted wrist shots of my two 7A38-702x frankens in the WRUW thread, earlier this week, it reminded me that in the 10 years plus that I've owned these bracelets, I'd never determined which Seiko model they were originally used on. I've tried googling Seiko p/n Z1020S on numerous occasions, but all that ever came up in search results were my own posts on other forums, like this one from the UK RLT forum, dating back to June 2011. Naturally, as a matter of course, I'd previously tried searching all the usual databases: Boley.de, Jules Borel and Seiko Oceania, but the strangely, part number Z1020S wasn't recognised by any of them. :(

Yesterday, I asked the question on SCWF (not really expecting to get any reply). After a few hours it was beginning to bug me, so as it was too cold to go out for the evening, I started randomly googling images: initially on Seiko 5, on the basis that the bracelet clasp wasn't stamped with the SQ logo, so it likely came off some early 1980's automatic. That search returned far too many results !

Much as I'm loathe to admit, I actually found the answer much quicker by searching on that irksome Seiko 'Royal Oak' misnomer, though it still took a fair bit of scrolling through all the crap, to find the first image (cached from an ended eBay listing). It's a 6309-5750, as I'd correctly surmised, a Seiko 5 automatic, produced in 1982-83, which came as both a two-tone with a gold dial (but still fitted with the same all stainless p/n Z1020S bracelet):

Or in all stainless with a charcoal dial, per this example I found in a thread on UhrForum.de:
