Horrid example of stripped gold plating - misrepresented !

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Gold-tone finish variants of Seiko 7A38's are generally much less popular with collectors, particularly when another similar all-stainless case model variant exists. Though some of them can be quite attractive watches in their own right, for example: the gold-tone 7A38-7260 SAA100J. These can sometimes be picked up on eBay for less than 100 Euros, as shown in the old forum's model specific thread. I have a few (too many) in my collection. Here are my 3 best condition examples (on the original Seiko p/n BRJ37G tan leather strap).

I have a couple of others besides, with acceptable levels of plating wear, fitted with teju lizard straps. But what do you do if you've acquired a well-worn example with noticeable plating loss ? There are three options: One is to leave it 'as is' and use it as a 'beater'. Another is to get it professionally re-plated, which assuming the plater achieves a decent result, will likely prove prohibitively expensive and cost more than the re-finished watch is worth. The other option, taken by most watch-botchers, is to strip off the remaining plating and polish the case. :(

This erstwhile gold-tone 7A38-7260 was listed earlier this morning by a devious Italian eBay seller, with an absolutely ridiculous Buy-it-Now price of $390 Euros - probably more that 4 times its current real worth, especially now they've stripped all its gold plating. They class the condition: Very nice piece in good general conditions of conservation.

I'd opine that it's a bit late to think about adding a case-back protection sticker !!

Note the description includes the phrase: 'Cassa in cromata', implying that the case has been chrome plated.
For your delectation (or disgust) there are 10 additional photos of this polished turd embedded in description.

Studying a couple of them more closely, for example this side-on shot, in view of the less than satisfactory finish ....

I suspect the case has actually been NICKEL plated, which is one of the intermediate stages, prior to gold plating. 8-)

Earlier this morning they also listed this 7A28-7020, which was once a two-tone, fitted with a bracelet, with a ludicrous Buy-it-Now price of 490 Euros. They've stripped the gold plating off the bezel, crown and pushers, yet laughably claim: Molto bello e ricercato, in buone condizioni generali di conservazione.

Before they decided to ruin it, an original unmolested 7A28-7020 SPR010J would have looked like this:

I can't say I've ever come across them before, but I think two badly botched mis-represented over-priced 7A's in one day qualifies them for inclusion on my 'eBay sellers to avoid' spreadsheet. Note the eBay seller's user ID violantesimone, which presumably is his real name - that'll be the 3rd Italian named Simone I've added to 'Ze List' !

I didn't bother adding that botched-up two-tone 7A28-7020 to my eBay watching page, but clicking the link again today, it appears to have sold a few days ago, for an undisclosed best offer. :|

No surprise, their 'polished turd' of a once-gold tone 7A38-7260, subject of my first post, remains steadfastly unsold.

One month after their first aborted offspring, here's another horrendous misrepresented polished turd from the bench of arch watch-botcher, Italian eBay seller violantesimone !! They listed it early this morning, but I've been busy doing other stuff, so hadn't had time to write it up before now.

To the unwary punter, the watch might appear to be a stainless 7A38-7280. But it has a grey 710L dial, albeit a rather washed out and moisture damaged one, with gold SEIKO dial logo and batons. No such thing exists. They describe the case as 'chrome'. I suspect it's actually nickel plated. This once was a two-tone that they've worked their 'magic' on.

Note the case-back is stamped 'STAINLESS STEEL' (to help complete the illusion), whereas a two-tone 7A38-7280 would be stamped 'ST. STEEL BASE METAL BEZEL'. There's also something not quite right about the '8' in 7280 in the above photo. It looks like it may once have been a '6' (as from a stainless 7A38-7260). There are an additional 6 photos embedded in the description. One of them proved enlightening. 8-)

They may have swapped (or doctored, either in metal or by photoshopping) the case-back, but their photo of the Z-fold clasp's stampings clearly shows that this watch was once a two-tone:

Apart from the ludicrous 490 Euros asking price - take my word for it: just avoid (watch and seller) like the plague !! :!:

FWIW - Here's how that two-tone 7A38-7280 may once have looked (a rather old photo of one of mine):

The latest handiwork of Italian arch watch-botcher violantesimone involves more than just stripped gold plating. :o Rather than start another thread (or change the title of this one) I'm going to add it on here. This morning, he listed what once was a 7A38-6010, purporting to be: “Molto bello e ricercato, in buone condizioni generali di conservazione".

The once black chrome coated watch case has been stripped and bead-blasted, as has the once gold-plated bezel. The pushers have been stripped of their gold plating and polished. The original gold-plated crown has been replaced by a weedy under-sized generic stainless one. The white stick (possibly repainted) hour and minute and black sweep second hands are Seiko, but not correct or original for this model. The lume on the dial batons looks degraded. The case-back has been so heavily skimmed that the 'Double Wave' logo in the centre has almost been obliterated. The ensemble is topped off by a cheap olive green NATO strap, designed to appeal to 'military minded' types. The 1980's style Seiko presentation box looks OK, but is academic. Yours (if you're stupid enough) for the Buy-it-Now price of 490 Euros !!!

It would appear that common sense (or buyer's remorse) has thankfully prevailed. :D That bead-blasted badly-botched misrepresented mess, the remnants of what once was a 7A38-6010 is back on eBay, re-listed earlier this morning !

I forgot to mention yesterday morning, that horrible bead-blasted 7A38-6010 on a NATO, re-listed by Italian watch botcher violantesimone, appears to have sold for a best offer once again. I wonder if it will stay sold this time. :?
