Another shill-bidding Italian eBay seller to avoid !

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Fact - which shouldn't be news to anybody. eBay Italy is rife with shill bidding. It almost seems to be the accepted norm, part of Italian culture. There are so many instances of it that I probably wouldn't have bothered to cite this example, were it not for the seller's unacceptable behaviour.

At the beginning of April, Italian eBay seller vintagebluearmy listed this far from 'top condition' stainless 7A38-7000 as a 10-day auction with an opening bid price of 1 Euro. I didn't bother taking a screenshot of the listing at the time, but I did right-click and save the photos, of which I've uploaded 4 of the 9 below. Note the non-original sweep hand fitted (there are two different ones shown - one is unpainted), the partially obliterated Tachymeter scale printing, the discoloured lume on most of the hour batons and the small dings on the bottom R.H. corner of the watch case.

As readers will no doubt be aware, I have a good eye (and memory) for a photo, particularly when a watch has certain distinguishing features like that. It didn't take me long to remember where I'd seen it before. 8-) This Instagram search on hashtag #seiko7A387000 returns a couple of wrist shot photos which are very similar to the seller's primary image.

It had been posted (a few times) by Vietnamese watch dealer thongpham_vintage_watch, as far back as August 2020.

As most of the Italian eBay seller's photos showed a South-East Asian skin tone, very similar to Thong Pham's and it was clearly the same (less than top condition) 7A38-7000, naturally I smelled a rat. So I sent him a message through eBay. Admittedly, my question was worded a bit cheekily, but I didn't quite expect the profane response that I received. :o

I probably should have reported him to eBay, but it's unlikely they'd have done anything. Instead I just added it to my eBay watching page, expecting the almost inevitable predictable outcome. The 10-day auction ended this afternoon, with bidding reaching a dizzy 403 Euros after 47 bids - a frankly ridiculous figure for a watch in this poor a condition.

Needless to say, as revealed by the eBay Bidding History the auction appears to have been properly shilled in the best time-honoured Italian tradition. The alleged winning bidder has 67% activity with this seller and has bid on 13 of his other auctions within the last 30 days. The losing bidder, who placed 18 of the 47 bids has 100% activity with the seller.

As usually happens when an eBay auction is shill bid well beyond the realms of sensible price, none of the losing bidders were evidently interested in a second chance offer. So it was re-listed earlier this evening as a 5-day auction with the same pointless opening bid price of 1 Euro. This time the Italian eBay seller has wisely used his own set of photos.

Note that again he claims it comprises 'all original parts'. Apart from the non-original replacement sweep second hand, it now also sports a cheap clasp extender, to compensate for the short bracelet.

This morning, I was exchanging messages with Instagram poster / seller thongpham_vintage_watch (about something else unrelated), whose photos of the same stainless 7A38-7000, I'd recognised from his earlier posts, like this one.

So while I had his attention, I thought I'd cheekily ask the question. ;) Please excuse the lack of ? punctuation mark.

So there you have it - straight from the horse's mouth: Thong Pham sold it for $200, because of the short bracelet.

After 24 hours, the watch has already been bid to 181 Euros after 23 bids, which I'd opine is more than it's realistically worth, given the condition (and the fact he paid $200 for it himself). Goes without saying, the current high bidder is the same shill (with a feedback of 12) who 'won' the previous auction.

Incidentally, you may have noticed, as I did, that he's included his Instagram ID in his listing description: soulhunter_ig Thought I'd have a quick nose, particularly after his profane eBay missive. Not that many photos of watches in his feed and appears to have a slightly perverse military fetish and bad dress sense. Just so you know who you're dealing with.

The re-listed 5-day Italian eBay auction for that far from top condition stainless 7A38-7000 ended a few minutes ago, apparently selling for 352 Euros after 38 bids - which is far more than this example is realistically worth on a good day.

Checking the eBay Bidding History, both the winning and losing bidders have 100% activity with the seller.

The winning bidder only placed 2 bids, both as last-minute snipes, within the last 10 seconds so could quite possibly have been genuine. Let's wait and see if it gets re-listed again.
