Excellent condition - Or just plain old tired and knackered ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

You be the judge. I'll be the jury and the executioner.

There is so much over-priced misrepresented tired junk on eBay lately, I could probably spend the rest of my days, wasting my time, pleading my case. I've got more important things to do, so I'm just going to select a few 'choice' examples. If there's something you've witnessed and feel as strongly about, feel free to add it onto the thread. ;)

My opening argument is this tired and knackered 7A38-701B 'Vulcan', fitted with a non-original replacement bracelet of dubious parentage, listed in the early hours of this morning by a US eBay seller, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of $799.95 ! :o The seller evidently has a much higher opinion of it. That or he's a stranger to the truth.

Note the right justified offset of the (fake) SEIKO logo on the bracelet clasp and the ineptly scratched case-back.

Amuses me how the seller manages to apportion condition ratings down to decimal figures (of .25 and .75) yet completely fails to rate the rust stained dial. Going by his scale of 1-10, this judge wouldn't give this tired and knackered excuse for a 7A38-701B an overall rating score of more than 2.75 !

I'd overlooked to add an update to this thread. Not surprisingly, that 7-day US eBay auction for a 7A38-701B 'Vulcan', fitted with non-original 'Feiko' replacement bracelet and badly rust-stained dial, ended without any bids placed, unsold.
The seller immediately re-listed as a Buy-it-Now for the same ridiculously over-optimistic asking price of $799.95.

This US eBay seller, rtm127 (Ryan to his friends) - a college graduate and self-proclaimed 'jewelry and watch expert', appears to have a penchant for Seiko 7A38's with dodgy-looking dials. In the early hours of this morning, he listed this well-worn stainless 7A38-7280 with a badly stained (sorry 'Patina') dial, as a 7-day auction, with a typical (by his standards) laughably over-optimistic opening bid price of $499.95 (might as well call it $500).

I'm not sure where he bought it, or what he paid for it (and care less). But I know this watch (case-back serial # 831585) has been 'doing the rounds' for a good few years, before it fell into his grasping hands. It's easy to recognise, because unlike most rust-stained white 710L dials, it hasn't leached onto the sub-dials. Here are a couple of photos (from two different sets), when it was listed by two different US eBay sellers, within the space of a week, back in May 2018.

I've been scratching my head, trying to remember where I've seen it posted more recently - possibly on WatchUseek or Instagram, but have now wasted enough time looking. The $64K question is: why would anybody want to pay $500 for that well-worn example with a 'Patina' dial, when you can pick up a perfectly good example for half that price ? :?

As I have written so many times before - all it ever takes is one mug punter. Checking my eBay watching page, I see that well-worn stainless 7A38-7280, with the rust-stained 'Patina' dial sold yesterday for the $499.95 opening bid price. The unfortunate buyer actually bid twice on it !

It's difficult to fathom the reasons why anybody in their right mind would want to pay good money, for such a poor example of a 7A38-701B 'Vulcan' - especially after it had been listed on eBay for over two years. Checking my watching page, I see profiteering US eBay seller rtm127's supposedly 'excellent condition' example finally attracted a mug punter buyer yesterday. The mind boggles.
