Another 7A48-7050 Fishing Master gets poached ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

If you followed the Anybody thinking about hooking a rare 7A48-7050 Fishing Master ? thread on the old forum, then you may recall, from my frustrated posts at the end of last year, I finally gave up, in disgust, on the idea of ever adding a 7A48-7050 Fishing Master to my collection; something I'd toyed with for many years. This was principally thanks to the selfish efforts of one particularly greedy cross-platform profiteering Japanese eBay re-seller, jap_t_t_w. :(

Just to quickly recap my own experience of bidding against him. At the end of November last year, this effectively NOS 7A48-7050 Fishing master was listed on Yahoo Japan, as a 1-day auction with an opening bid price of 78,000 Yen. Not cheap, granted, but I thought to myself that if I was ever going to buy one, this mint unworn example had to be it.

It ended up selling for ¥91,800 Yen after 14 bids, equivalent to approx. $881.70 USD / £662.40 GBP, at prevailing rates.

I was the losing bidder. I bid it as high as 91,000 Yen, before giving up. The auction finishing time was automatically extended by a total of 45 minutes. Whoever I was bidding against seemed determined to win. Their annoying tactic was to leave it until the final seconds of the 5 or 10 minute extension period, before placing their next bid, which of course extended the finishing time once again. :x With hindsight, I wish now I'd carried on slugging it out with them. No doubt it could easily have gone on for an hour or more, but I'm fairly certain now I know who I was bidding against, that even if the bid price had gone over 100,000 Yen, it's unlikely I would have ended up winning. :(

So you can probably imagine how absolutely livid I was, when profiteering cross-platform Japanese re-seller jap_t_t_w listed the same unworn 7A48-7050 Fishing Master on eBay on Christmas Day, with a Buy-it-Now price of $2200 !! :x

It's not the first time I've seen him pull this stunt either. There was another similar instance earlier in November. :!:
Although he's since reduced their prices slightly), both those 7A48-7050 Fishing Masters still currently remain unsold.

I may be pre-judging his motives, but it appears this profiteering re-seller is attempting to monopolize the market.

Last week, another 7A48-7050 Fishing Master, in average worn condition, with a short bracelet (only 16cm) was listed by a 'Store' seller, as a 4-day auction with an opening bid price of 1 Yen. Frankly I wasn't really that interested anymore, but added it to my Buyee watching page and bid it up to 10,000 Yen. At lunchtime today, 12:40 UK time, an ending soon notification arrived in my email inbox, reminding me that the auction was due to end in 15 minutes.

I didn't bother taking any screen shots when I first saw the listing on Yahoo Japan, but here's the basic details:

One hour after it was originally scheduled to end (@ 21:55 JST), the current Yahoo Japan auction for a 7A48-7050 Fishing Master is still being automatically extended, due to late bids, with no sign of it ending anytime soon !!

Two hours after the listing was originally scheduled to end (@ 21:55 JST local time), and it's still going on !!
Bidding is currently @ 59,200 Yen, after 62 bids and it's just gone into another 10 minute extension period !! :o

The auction finally ended a few minutes ago @ 25 minutes past Midnight (which is now tomorrow, the 17th in Japan), the original scheduled finishing time (21:55 JST) having been automatically extended by a total of 2½ hours !!

https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v784446826

It sold, after an epic 67 bids, for ¥64,200 Yen + 10% Japanese Sales Tax, making a total of ¥70,620 Yen, equivalent to $667.80 USD / £480.73 GBP.

As with the two previous instances, the encrypted winning bidder ID is shown on Buyee* as o*E*0***, so I think it's fairly safe to assume that the persistent bidder, who finally prevailed in this latest auction, is again 'our friend', profiteering cross-platform re-seller jap_t_t_w. It'll be interesting to see how much he deems fit to mark up the price of this one, when he eventually gets around to listing it on eBay - it's usually at least double.

PS: for future reference, the case-back s/n was 590024. ;)

*From the feedback he left against the mint unworn example in December, his encrypted Yahoo ID is 3*b*f*** (636).

Ha ! Seems that Buyee's and Yahoo Japan's ID encryption was throwing me a curved ball.

Google provided the answer: he's actually using the same ID on Yahoo Japan - jap_t_t_w (feedback of 636 matches).

Not that it makes me feel any better, but I was absolutely spot-on in my prediction. In the early hours of this morning, profiteering cross-platform re-seller jap_t_t_w listed that most recent EX-Yahoo Japan 7A48-7050 Fishing Master on eBay, with a typical greedily marked-up Buy-it-Now price of $1400 !! (They paid the equivalent of $667.80 USD.) :x

7A48-7050-FishingMaster-eBay-Feb2021-(Re-seller)-Listing.png (185.53 KiB) Viewed 7753 times

It's not as if any further proof were needed, but of course their photo of case-back serial number 590024 matches.

rsz_7a48-7050-fishingmaster-ebay-feb2021-re-seller-12.jpg
rsz_7a48-7050-fishingmaster-ebay-feb2021-re-seller-12.jpg (200.38 KiB) Viewed 7753 times

So, as demonstrated by their recent 2½ hour long slugging match, to obtain this latest example, they clearly are intent on establishing a monopoly on this sought after Seiko design icon.

They haven't quite yet achieved that, because there's another 7A48-7050 Fishing Master listed on eBay, which has now been offered by three other cross-platform proxy re-sellers: oriental-vintage-modern, mushuplab and ys-variety.

But by their selfish greed, they've effectively cornered 75% of the current market. Here's the current summary:

It may have taken them nearly 4 months, but greedy profiteering cross-platform re-seller jap_t_t_w appears to have eventually found a mug punter buyer for one of their 3 ex-Yahoo Japan 7A48-7050 Fishing Masters. Checking my eBay watching page (and verified using WatchCount.com's Look-up tool) it finally sold in the early hours of this morning for their slightly reduced Buy-it-Now price of $2156 ! Evidently to someone with more money than sense. Talk about getting caught 'hook, line and sinker'.

This was the nicest of the 3, in almost mint unworn condition, which had sold on Yahoo Japan at the end of November last year, for ¥91,800 - equivalent to approx. $881.70 USD / £662.40 GBP. I was the losing bidder in the YJ auction. :x

Having made a handsome fat profit on that one, checking my previous summary link, I noticed they've since deigned to reduce the Buy-it-Now prices on the other two (the uppermost of which has been listed since 18th November last year).

Note the deep diagonal scratch across the crystal and the staining around the perimeter of the movement backplate, indicating that the watch has suffered a moderate battery leak at some point. Needless to say, the case-back serial number 520549 matches the one I'm about to upload further down.

Naturally, like all his previous examples, it was sourced from Yahoo Japan at a fraction of his current asking price. :x

It was listed at the end of July, by a regular Yahoo Japan 'Store' seller ecoworld2016 as a 4-day auction with a low start opening bid price of 1 Yen. I spotted it after it had been listed for a couple of days, but anticipating that jap_t_t_w might strike again, I took the precaution of saving the details, in the event it transpired that he'd won the auction.

Belatedly checking my eBay watching page, I see that greedy profiteering Japanese eBay re-seller jap_t_t_w eventually found a mug punter buyer for one of their three grossly marked-up ex-Yahoo Japan 7A48-7050 Fishing Masters, last weekend. It took a further reduction from their original Buy-it-Now asking price of $1400 amounting to approximately 30% discount, to a slightly odd figure of $968.57 and EIGHTEEN months, but they still managed to turn a profit.

Two of the 7A48-7050 Fishing Masters, listed by cross-platform profiteering re-seller jap_t_t_w in November 2020 (their stock reference W594) and August 2021 (W866) still remain unsold, despite their Buy-it-Now prices having been reduced to (less than) half their original ludicrous ask. With the number of watchers accrued, I suspect it's only a matter of time before another mug punter caves in.

Overnight they listed another average condition 7A48-7050 Fishing Master on eBay, with a comparatively more sensible (by their usual avaricious standards) Buy-it-Now Price of $800.

There's an interesting admission of their pricing strategy towards the end of the description:

There have been a few 7A48-7050 Fishing Masters listed and sold on Yahoo Japan auctions in recent months, but I had to go all the way back to July to find this one. It was a 5-day auction, which ended on 23rd July, selling for ¥26,200 Yen after 16 bids. The prevailing exchange rate was 1 JPY = 0.0070547 USD, which gives an equivalent selling price of $185 US. Not too different from today's exchange rate which comps out at $180. So their mark-up to $800 is typical greed.
