Devious eBay sellers - Who do they think they're fooling ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

The annoying practice of ending listings as allegedly no longer available and immediately re-listing the item is a tactic / ruse employed by many devious eBay sellers, intended to confuse potential buyers / mug punters into thinking the item is newly listed (when it isn't). Forum member kerochan (Dave) had asked the question in another thread last month. ;)
kerochan wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 12:01 pmWhy do the sellers end/restart their ads like this? Is it to fool any potential buyers that an item hasn't been too long unsold? I mean it only takes minor search skills to filter out this behavior.
I replied at some length, but here's the main gist of it:
Seiko7A38 wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 12:29 pmDevious eBay sellers like Giuseppe (though he's certainly far from alone in using this particular shenanigan) regularly end their listings (either because of a supposed error, or that it's allegedly no longer available) and almost immediately turn round and re-list it. This has the effect of bringing their listing to the top of any search results, assuming that like myself and most people, you search on 'Newly Listed' in descending order. It also flags the item for two days as 'Newly Listed', so inexperienced eBayers (mug punters) may think the item is actually a new appearance. Some of the smarter ones also shuffle the order of their photos (changing the primary image) to add to the confusion. Also, since last year, eBay started automatically deleting all ended listings after 60 days, so employing this devious tactic makes it almost impossible to check up on items that have been kicking around unsold for months (or sometimes even years) on end.
Then you have the eBay sellers who think they're even smarter than the rest.
Appropriate quote from the poem Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field, by Sir Walter Scott:
Canto 6, stanza 17: "Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!"

There were at least four stainless 7A38-7020's newly listed on eBay in June (hence my photo captions). This well-worn example, fitted with with wrong case-back (off a two-tone 7A38-7190) first appeared late in the month, listed by a UK eBay seller with the user ID saf8782 who stated their location as 'London', with a typical ridiculously over-optimistic Buy-it-Now price of £495. Checking their properties, I saved the photos on the 29th (although I didn't think to take a screen print of the listing at the time). Note both the UEFA hype and 'Royal Oak' nickname / misnomer in the title.

That first listing was ended less than a fortnight later as allegedly no longer available:

Needless to say, it was immediately re-listed (and ended in a similar manner, again less than a fortnight later):

Note that since then, eBay seller saf8782 has changed that particular eBay ID to timeforeverbody24. (Of more anon). Not only that, but in between my taking those two screen prints earlier this morning, that new eBay ID's feedback has mysteriously increased from 355 to 391, which possibly implies that another unknown ID, belonging to the same seller, has been merged into timeforeverbody24. The plot thickens !

It was subsequently re-listed on 25th July by a different eBay ID: omegatime24 (no guesses as to the outcome).

No great surprise, it was immediately re-listed once again, but this time using yet another eBay ID: paoloquaranta ! :o

The photos are the same as he used in his original listing and subsequent re-listings, but uploaded in much smaller sizes. The description is identical, including the two short sentences, demonstrating his less than perfect command of English:
The back case is been changed to another reference number.
Because of the back been changed the price been reduced.
Taking his words literally, the price appears to have been 'reduced' by 5 pence since his two previous re-listings (using ID omegatime24), from £500 to 'only' £499.95. I suspect the slight change in price / format is more likely intended to throw a curve ball, at anybody who might have been watching the previous listings.

Since eBay began automatically deleting all ended items after 60 days, last year, it's become increasingly difficult to track, document and conclusively prove sellers' shenanigans. All the links that I've included in my previous posts still work at the time of writing, though no doubt they'll soon start disappearing into the ether. Although occasionally annoying and frustratingly inconvenient, I can certainly understand it from their database management standpoint. However, eBay seem to becoming increasingly more complicit in assisting devious sellers.

In the past, when an eBay seller changed their User ID, you used to be able to click on a link (in a box on right hand side of their profile feedback page), which displayed their previous user ID history, with dates of changes in tabular format. Sometimes the oldest ID might have been partially encrypted, but it was a useful tool nonetheless. However, trying that recently and again this morning (using a saved text file of the eBay link) and taking timeforeverbody24 as an example: https://contact.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI ... everbody24

Now returns the standard eBay error message with the annoying little hooded orange tw@t:

There's not been any official announcement made (that I can find), but eBay have evidently surreptitiously removed the feature, to protect certain individuals. See these archived eBay 'Help' topics, which conveniently haven't been updated:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Archive-B ... p/20182040
https://community.ebay.com/t5/My-Accoun ... p/30628885

The question has also been asked on Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ebay/comments/ ... eature_on/

So, in the absence of this tool, how can I be so certain that eBay user ID timeforeverbody24 was previously saf8782 ?
Let's just call it due diligence. 8-) Though I may have been acting under the influence of a bottle of vino at the time.

Incidentally timeforeverbody24 (feedback 391) previously user ID saf8782, currently isn't listing anything.
His alter ego omegatime24 (feedback 185) is currently listing 98 watches, 24 of which are vintage Omegas.
This other ID paoloquaranta (feedback 59) has recently (re)listed 50 watches, including the stainless 7A38-7020.
Thankfully it's the only Seiko 7A38 he's currently listing. Perhaps he'd be safer sticking to what he knows best. :P

I suppose I should add a few updates to this ongoing saga.

Devious UK eBay seller paoloquaranta has continued to end and immediately re-list his ridiculously over-priced stainless 7A38-7020, fitted with the wrong case-back, throughout October and November in his predictably erroneous manner.

When he re-listed it again, for the nth time, still using his paoloquaranta eBay ID, in the early hours of 4th December, he increased the Buy-it-Now price from £499.95 to an even more unrealistic £555.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UEFA-SEIKO-R ... 5215801400

Ironically the two lines in his description still read:

7A38-7020-Stainless+Grey-eBay-Dec2021-paoloquaranta-(re-listed)-Description.png

I just habitually added it to all the other crap on my eBay watching page and thought no more of it. That was until 13th December, when I observed, with a degree of incredulity, that it appeared to have sold for an undisclosed best offer.

I could have posted these updates then, but remained extremely sceptical and so allowed a brief 'cooling off period' - just in case the luckless buyer suffered the anticipated remorse and came to his senses. Evidently he did; must have returned it to the seller, because it was back on eBay, re-listed yesterday afternoon !

Checking my eBay watching page, I noticed that devious UK eBay seller paoloquaranta had ended that latest re-listing in the early hours of this morning, because of yet another unforced error.

It may have taken him over 6½ months, umpteen re-listings and no less that FIVE different eBay ID's, but it looks like devious UK eBay seller 'saf' (or whatever his name is), eventually found himself a mug punter buyer for his stainless 7A38-7020, (fitted with the wrong case-back off a two-tone 7A38-7190) this afternoon. All it ever takes is one.
