Profiteering German eBay re-seller Quartzwerk continued ....

Post by Seiko7A38 »

Readers may recall my last couple of posts from this thread on the old forum, which I left unfinished. Hence 'continued'.

It concerned the recent activities of profiteering German eBay seller quartzwerk and his intentional monopolizing of the lucrative market for the sought-after stainless 7A38-7020 SAA009J (which are relatively common within Germany). Very much in the style of profiteering US eBay re-seller flobaca, although he's been at it for much longer.

Regarding my prediction in the top paragraph of that (partial) post above, of course I knew I was absolutely correct about that particular stainless 7A38-7020 (case-back s/n 3D1706), which he'd bought in mid-January for 312.11 Euros.

Although for some reason, he delayed listing it on eBay Germany for over a month (until 20th February) with a typical greedily marked-up Buy-it-Now price of 599 Euros ! :x

Not that I really need to further prove this case, but here's his photo of the case-back showing that same s/n 3D1706:

Regarding my PS - I'll endeavour to prove the 4 earlier cases later, when I've got more time ....

What with getting the new website / forum up and running, I didn't find any more time. Apart from that excuse, there's the problem of eBay actively deleting ended listings after 60 days, so any further efforts have probably been timed out. But I have since managed to find one of them, albeit somewhat belatedly ....

Bringing this sore subject up to date, early this morning quartzwerk listed yet another well-worn stainless 7A38-7020, with a typical greedily marked-up Buy-it-Now price of 549 Euros ! This is now his 7th in a little over 3 months !! :o

The listing follows his usual standard template format, including 6 photos, of which I'm only bothering to upload half.

Apart from the case-back s/n 465484, it should be easy to recognise from the damaged and discoloured lume, but at the moment I'll admit I'm struggling to find the eBay listing where he'd bought it (probably a LOT cheaper). Regardless, it sure as hell ain't 'Top' (condition), by any stretch of the imagination, so best avoided, especially at that stupid price. :| Unfortunately, given their extreme popularity, seems there's always somebody out there who wants one badly enough to settle for a lesser example. It sold the following day, not for the ludicrously marked-up Buy-it-Now price of 549 Euros, but an undisclosed best offer.

Last weekend quartzwerk listed another stainless 7A38-7020 SAA009J in somewhat better cosmetic condition than the previous example. This time he cleverly promoted it as the official UEFA Euro '84 watch, which indeed it was (of more anon). To add some faux provenance, he included a Seiko 'Official Timer' pin (which wasn't specific to this tournament). His asking price ? A typical greedily marked-up 749 Euros ! :o

Although he's attempted to obscure the case-back serial number, by airbrushing it in an amateurish fashion, zooming in on his photo, it's still legible as 3D3627.

Needless to say, the case-back serial number 3D3627 matches the one he'd failed to obscure properly.
As does his encrypted winning bidder ID and feedback (then 358), shown by the eBay Bidding History:

I'll admit it took me a little while to find the previous seller's listing and when I did, I had to do a double take !
Note his winning bid price of 312.11 Euros - the exact same figure he'd paid to win a previous auction in January !

In fact, there was another stainless 7A38-7020 SAA009J on eBay Germany that I was watching with equal, if not more interest. It was a half decent example listed as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 276 Euros. At that price I suspected it might give quartzwerk a reasonable profit margin (by his greedy standards), were he to win the auction.

The auction ended with the 7A38-7020 selling for 366 Euros after 6 bids:

Thankfully on this rare occasion quartzwerk didn't end up winning the auction. As revealed by the eBay Bidding History below, he sniped it in the closing seconds as anticipated, bidding 365 Euros, but lost out to another higher snipe bid.

Having narrowly missed out on that example a fortnight ago, I'd (wrongly as it transpires) suspected that profiteering German eBay re-seller quartzwerk might have had nothing in the pipeline to keep his 'Royal Oak' gravy train rolling. Had that been the case, he's just remedied the shortfall.

This stainless 7A38-7020 SAA009J was listed yesterday evening by a German eBay seller as a 7-day auction with a relatively low opening bid price of 100 Euros. Note that as originally listed, there was no option to make an offer.*

The German eBay seller had only uploaded the one photo, which I have cropped and rotated. See my comments below.

The listing had been live for approximately 3 hours or so and no bids had been placed. It then appears that quartzwerk contacted the seller and asked if he could make him an offer. Very much in the manner of his US counterpart flobaca. *Although nothing is actually shown in the revision history, the listing was last updated on 27 Mar, 2021 20:25:51 GMT.

As shown by the eBay Purchase History, it sold to quartzwerk less than 10 minutes later for an undisclosed best offer:

Sure as eggs is eggs, this one will undoubtedly reappear in due course, with the price duly marked up. Unfortunately there was only one photo, so no case-back serial number to prove it conclusively. There are a couple of small marks visible on the bezel and the bottom R.H. corner of the watch case is dinged, which should assist with identification. More significantly, there's no sign of the black nylon crystal gasket - pointing to the replacement crystal having been glued in. It'll be interesting to see if quartzwerk attempts to remedy this, before offering it for sale.

Now he's latched onto the UEFA Euro '84 connection (in addition to the 'Royal Oak' value adder), I suspect he'll probably list it in a similar manner to his previous successful sale - with another Seiko 'Official Timer' pin. While I was searching for the previous ended listing for the 7A38-7020 (that he'd bought on 8th March), I also very quickly ran a search on ended listings for Seiko 'Official Timer' pins on eBay Germany.

I didn't find the one he'd sold with the last 7A38-7020, but I found a couple of others, one of which still remains unsold. The going rate seems to be about 5 Euros. I spotted another rather more attractive design which had sold for 6 Euros on 13th March - almost perfect timing. 8-)

Talk about perfect timing !! While I was putting the finishing touches to my previous post, profiteering German eBay re-seller quartzwerk had been busy uploading his latest ridiculously over-priced listing for a stainless 7A38-7020. I was absolutely spot-on in my prediction about the UEFA Euro '84 format and his inclusion of that Seiko 'Official Timer' pin - if not the watch itself. Obviously there's no way he could have received it, unless he'd driven the 350 Kms overnight from Frechen (near the Belgian border) to Sande (on the north coast) to collect it. My mistake, he must have had yet another in the pipeline. I guess he's apportioning a large part of his ludicrous asking price of 899 Euros to that 6 Euro pin.

I'll admit that at the moment, I'm struggling to find an ended eBay listing for a 7A38-7020 with a matching serial number of 3D5596. I've got SO many photos of them in my folders, but a few sets I've saved over the last 3 months don't include clear case-back shots. It could possibly be one of them. :? One thing is certain however, this latest example is anything but 'TOP' condition. The case and bezel have plenty of small dings, the bracelet and clasp are covered in scratches and scuffs and if you look closely at his second photo, the paint on the SEIKO dial logo is flaking badly.

In fact I'd already found it, albeit somewhat belatedly, and posted a summary higher up the page, over a fortnight ago:

So there, in 4 of the original German eBay seller's 7 photos are the same dinged case and bezel, scratched and scuffed bracelet and clasp, grotty Seiko dial logo and matching case-back serial number 3D5596. 8-) He's since replaced the scratched crystal, as it's now fitted with one with a small polished bevel edge, but otherwise looks much the same.

Bearing in mind the vast discrepancy between what he paid for it (49 Euros) and the extortionate figure he's currently asking (899 Euros), I'd say 'best avoided at any price'. But I'll guarantee you some mug punter will make him an offer, thinking they're getting a bargain. You wait and see. ;)

Not that I've got the slightest interest in football, personally, but I've found the book, with the UEFA '84 logo, that he's using as a base in his listings. It's the German language version of the 1984 yearbook. There's literally a dozen of them currently listed for sale on eBay Germany, with prices between 1 and 20 Euros.

You'd think with the extortionate prices he's asking for the watches, he could afford to chuck one of those in too.

There are proper (non-Seiko) official UEFA Euro '84 pins out there too, for anybody prepared to do a bit of searching.

Profiteering German eBay re-seller quartzwerk initially appeared to be struggling to find a mug punter buyer for his latest grossly over-priced stainless 7A38-7020. Hardly surprising, given the condition. Like many devious sellers, he also covertly plugs his eBay listings using his Instagram feed (but without actually saying they're for sale, or stating a price).

He'd already plugged this one, using the primary image from his eBay listing. On 11th April, he again attempted to raise interest, by posting this on Instagram - again my scan of pages 17 and 18 from the SEIKO UK 1984 Sport Tech brochure:

Image

His promotion of Seiko's SAA009J as the Official Timer to the 1984 European Championship depends on its inclusion, so you'd expect he'd be capable of captioning it correctly. Seems that greed goes hand in hand with incompetence. Not only had he written: Seiko Official Timer to the European Championship in 1982 in France, but then compounded his cock-up by adding the hashtags: #uefa1982, #euro82 and #france82 !

As you can see from my screenshot, I'd added a comment requesting him to remove it. I also reported him to Instagram for breach of copyright. I subsequently added another comment, mockingly pointing out his mistakes about the year. :P But as soon as I did that, he blocked me - typical childish reaction, a commonly used tactic. So I can't see whether he's since corrected his cock-ups (or complied and removed it).

Indeed, over the last fortnight he'd made a couple of revisions to his listing, gradually reducing the original ridiculously marked-up Buy-it-Now price of 899 Euros by 50 Euro increments:

Given the watch's poor condition, I'd expected this to continue for a while, but to my astonishment, he appears to have found himself a mug punter. It sold in the early hours of this morning for the reduced Buy-it-Now price of 799 Euros ! :o

Very much a 'snatch and grab' in the inimitable style of flobaca - providing him with an instant 500 Euros profit ! :x
It may have taken him 4 months, but for an initial outlay of a mere 49 Euros for the watch and adding 6 Euros for the Official Timer pin, that's a handsome profit of 744 Euros, for very little effort. Nice work if you can stoop that low. :x

Here's profiteering German eBay seller quartzwerk's latest Euro '84 hyped listing for a well-worn stainless 7A38-7020, which appeared earlier today, with what now seems to be his preferred Buy-it-Now price of 899 Euros (regardless of condition). Once again, this example is far from 'Top', by any stretch of the imagination. As with his two previous similarly hyped listings, the sale includes an almost irrelevant generic Seiko 'Official Timer' pin (cost 6 Euros).

As in his penultimate listing, in typical amateurish fashion, he's attempted (but again failed) to obscure the case-back serial number. Looks like he's using a felt tip marker. Zooming in on his photo, it's not difficult to discern it: 465213. But in terms of proving anything, that's academic in this instance. This well-worn stainless 7A38-7020 is the same watch he 'back-doored' on 27th March, for a best offer (100 Euros ?) per my post higher up the page. Even without a case-back serial number, it's easy to recognise from it's distinguishing features - notably the lack of a black nylon crystal gasket. As I wrote at the time:

Sure as eggs is eggs, this one will undoubtedly reappear in due course, with the price duly marked up. Unfortunately there was only one photo, so no case-back serial number to prove it conclusively. There are a couple of small marks visible on the bezel and the bottom R.H. corner of the watch case is dinged, which should assist with identification. More significantly, there's no sign of the black nylon crystal gasket - pointing to the replacement crystal having been glued in. It'll be interesting to see if quartzwerk attempts to remedy this, before offering it for sale.

I'm not sure why quartzwerk chose that particular photo to use as the backdrop in his primary image. It shows the late French team manager Michel Hidalgo (who passed away in March 2020), holding the UEFA trophy aloft, carried on the shoulders of his victorious team. He certainly wouldn't have been wearing anything as cheap or mundane as a Seiko 7A38-7020. Other photos show him wearing a rectangular gold watch on a leather strap - possibly a Cartier Santos.

Checking my eBay watching page, it appears that profiteering German eBay seller quartzwerk has found another mug punter buyer for his latest Euro '84 hyped well-worn stainless 7A38-7020. It sold this morning for a reduced Buy-it-Now price of 799 Euros. Once again, a tidy fat profit on his 100 Euros (Best Offer) outlay, for minimal effort. :x

At the risk of repeating myself ....

Here's profiteering German eBay seller quartzwerk's latest Euro '84 hyped listing for a well-worn stainless 7A38-7020, which appeared half an hour ago, with what has become his preferred Buy-it-Now price of 899 Euros (regardless of the watch's condition). I notice he's stopped adding 'TOP' to his listing titles; this one looks a bit rough. Same M.O. as his 3 previous similarly hyped listings, the sale includes an almost irrelevant generic Seiko 'Official Timer' pin (cost 6 Euros).

Ignoring the football paraphernalia, just take a good close look at his head on-shot of this typically well-worn example, which is covered in small dings, nicks and scratches. He's obviously fitted a replacement crystal, but with one with an inappropriate small polished bevel edge - probably a Cousins' generic 'cheapie', p/n F150CMH310.

Going by his past failures, I was surprised that this greedy incompetent re-seller had actually finally managed to completely obscure the case-back number in his eBay listing photo. So I take great delight in putting the boot in. :D

Note that his latest description includes the sentence: siehe Video unter https://youtu.be/z5SVUkAan7s.
He's uploaded an amateurish hand-held video of the watch to YouTube. At 0:52 seconds, he gave away an own goal.

Continuing the football puns - free kick given or not, that's another devious offside trap set for an unwitting scorer. :x It's about time this unscrupulous dirty fouling player was given the red card.
