Orient J39701-70 - Indianapolis 500 Logo Variants

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I've already written about these obscure variants of the Orient J39 'Diver' at some considerable length and in much more detail on the old forum. Unfortunately, I lumped them into this thread: Some wry observations on Orient J39 pricing, which obviously from its original title was more concerned with pricing than the watches per se. In hindsight, I probably should have created a separate dedicated topic, which I'm now doing retrospectively, 9 years later. In fact, I'd started that thread by complaining vociferously about the asking price for the very first example of an Indianapolis 500 logo'd Orient J39 that I ever clapped eyes on, which was listed on Yahoo Japan in the last week of December 2011:

No matter how badly I may have wanted it, I stubbornly refused to pay anything like the YJ seller's asking price, with a predictable outcome, someone else bought it, albeit 20 months later. Needless to say I was extremely despondent.

That said, despite having deliberately missed the opportunity, I justified my inaction to myself on the basis of pricing, especially when in March 2019, I'd purchased 5 conventionally logo'd NOS Orient J39x01-70's for a mere $99 each !

There was still, however, a niggling void in my collection. From that sad day in August 2013 and for the next 6 years, the Indianapolis 500 logo'd Orient J39701-70 became one of my most sought-after grails. Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a patient person (quite the opposite), but there's an old saying: all good things come to those who wait. :) In September 2019 I finally spotted another example on listed on Yahoo Japan:

With the selfless assistance of Japanese forum member Daisuke, I snagged it for a remarkably satisfying 5,500 Yen. :D

In February 2020, I spotted this black dialed version, in virtually NOS condition, which came with its instruction leaflet:

Needless to say, I was determined to win the auction, but there was rather more competition from other bidders this time and I ended up paying 31,500 Yen. A hefty price, but still somewhat less than the 'Serena_Special' example. ;)

As I said earlier, I've already written up my findings on these Orient J39 variants in much more detail on the old forum, notably on page 4 of that thread. I'll attempt to summarize them here.

The watch dial is very similar to the standard Orient model, except obviously it has an Indianapolis 500 logo in place of ORIENT CHRONOGRAPH QUARTZ 100m. The dial part number identifier is J392 0017 SI 902 (as compared to the Orient branded dial p/n ending in 002). The dial logo is a simplified monochrome rendering of the 1985 Indianapolis 500 logo. Every year, since 1980, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have created a different new logo for their annual 500 mile race event, so this would point to these watches having been manufactured in late 1984 or early 1985.

The 1985 race being memorable for Danny Sullivan's remarkable 'Spin and Win'. See this short YouTube video.

The case-backs of these watches carry exactly the same stampings as a standard production stainless J39701-70. There is no Indianapolis 500 logo engraved on it (as seen on the Orient C27219-60 divers mentioned lower down page 4 of the old forum thread). As can also be seen in the above photo, it uses the standard bracelet, stamped with p/n SA160.

However there is a slight difference in the clasp closer on this variant, which is plain and sprayed silver ....

.... compared to the ORIENT engraved clasp of the standard model, which is brushed stainless finish:

The 1985 Indianapolis 500 logo is reproduced slightly better on the cardboard sleeve of the J39 instruction leaflet:

P1580076.jpg
P1580076.jpg (108.1 KiB) Viewed 11096 times

However its contents are printed almost entirely in Japanese:

I haven't translated very much of it, but this looks like a list of service centres (in Japan only) with phone numbers.

P1580080.jpg

オリエント時計会社 in the bottom RH corner translates as Orient Watch Company.

When I first encountered these watches, I'd naturally (possibly too simplistically) assumed they were produced for the American market - specifically for sale as souvenirs at the 1985 Indianapolis 500. I wasted a considerable amount of time following this line of research. I did manage to contact Nicole Garside who was then the Director of Licensing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and is now Senior Director, Consumer Products at IndyCar. I asked her if she knew whether Indianapolis Motor Speedway had a licensing agreement with the Orient Watch Co. Ltd. (Japan) in 1985. She replied: Let me do some digging. We had an agent in Japan representing us at that time so it is very possible. I didn’t start here until ’99 so I may or may not be able to find this information. But I will try.

She didn't. :( However, a few factors have since convinced me that my initial assumption was wrong. These watches have English / Kanji day wheels. Had they been produced for the American market they would (by default) have had Spanish as the second language. Then there's the instruction leaflet, printed almost entirely in Japanese, listing only Japanese service locations at the bottom. Significantly, the few examples seen have all turned up on Yahoo Japan. Instead, I'm now inclined to believe that they were produced for the Japanese domestic market. I may be jumping to unproven conclusions, but I suspect they may have been produced as a collaboration between Orient Watch Co. Ltd. and another now defunct company called Libre Real Time. (You'll need to have read and digested my 'off topic' post, in the old forum thread, about the Indianapolis 500 Orient C27's, dated February 27, 2020 @ 7:49AM to follow my logic).

Here's a few gratuitous photos of my two examples from that old forum thread: a couple of wrist shots and a pair of side-by-side photos. The second one used an A4-sized sticker sheet of 1985 Indianapolis 500 logos for the background.

Having attained my grails, I'm more than content with my two examples, but that doesn't stop me looking. :) For one thing, there may have been more than just the two dial colours produced. So I still search Yahoo Japan on 'Indianapolis 500' and 'J39701-70', fairly regularly. This well-worn head only, currently a non-runner, with slightly discoloured lumed batons came up a week ago, as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of 1000 Yen.

OK, so I really didn't need another white dialed example, especially a restoration project in poorer condition than the 'minter' already in my collection, but I never could resist a bargain. :P ¥3800 JPY equates to $35.82 USD / £25.67 GBP.

Whereas I'm not in any great rush, it'll be interesting to see which arrives first - the Orient J39701-70 from Yahoo Japan or the vintage 1985 Indianapolis 500 coffee mug from eBay in the States, that I treated myself to yesterday afternoon.

We have a winner (if a non-runner). My Orient J39701-70 Indy 500 head only beater arrived from Japan this morning. :)

According to eBay's tracking, the 1985 Indianapolis 500 logo'd coffee mug hasn't even left USPS's New Jersey hub yet. :(
It's supposedly due for delivery sometime next week.

Given the hassle I recently experienced with another J39, it was with some trepidation that I unscrewed the case-back. I was half expecting the slightly discoloured lume to be a portent of possible battery leakage. But no sign whatsoever - just a lot of grubby fingerprints. The old Sony battery that I removed was bone dry underneath.

But it's going to need a quick pit stop to sort out the sticky, almost solid pushers, before heading to the Winner's Circle.

In case you might be wondering what had become of my recently acquired cheap beater Indy 500 logo'd J39701-70, that 'quick pit stop' turned into a lengthy trip to the garage workshops, where it's still languishing, awaiting my attention. :( I had noted the comment in the YJ seller's description: * Some buttons are stuck. (Upper left when facing the front). The two pushers on the right hand side of the case came out relatively easily, but the 10 'clock pusher is resolutely stuck in there ! :x Naturally I tried my usual tactic of soaking it overnight in WD-40, to no avail. Left it for 48 hours and it still wouldn't budge, even when moderate force was applied. I'm in two minds what to do with it at the moment. I'm almost ready to concede defeat and reassemble it as is, leaving the 10 o'clock pusher stuck, as I rarely use the split time function. Or I might slot the dial / movement into another better condition watch case. Let's see.

Perhaps these things aren't quite so rare as I initially thought, because this morning I stumbled across another example - by complete accident. I was scrolling through the Instagram feed of thongpham_vintage_watch, looking for something else unrelated, as part of my research for another thread. I came across this old post of his from October last year. :o

Image

It includes these two photos of an Orient J39701-70 'head only' with an Indy 500 logo'd black dial:

Orient-J39701-70-Indy500-Stainless-BlackFace-HeadOnly-Instagram-ThongPham-1.jpg

Scrolling back through his Instagram feed I found an earlier post, showing the watch fitted with a non-original bracelet:

Image

The following month, he'd also uploaded this video post to Instagram, showing the chronograph operating (sort of):

Image

The erratic movement of the chronograph hands is another low battery indicator - as can also be seen from the constant seconds hand moving in 2 second steps. You thought he might have replaced the battery before making the video.

It might not be immediately obvious from his Instagram profile, but Thong Pham is a Vietnamese watch dealer. However, he rarely states a price in his posts, let alone that any watch is actually for sale. As you can see from his couple of posts above, he often doesn't bother with hashtags - which is the reason I hadn't spotted it before today. :( That's probably also the reason his original post had received only 4 likes (before I added another). I really didn't expect it to still be available 6 months post facto, but nonetheless I messaged him asking the question:

Orient-J39701-70-Indy500-Stainless-BlackFace-HeadOnly-Instagram-ThongPham-Messages.png
Orient-J39701-70-Indy500-Stainless-BlackFace-HeadOnly-Instagram-ThongPham-Messages.png (26.03 KiB) Viewed 10933 times

It's certainly in better condition than my recently acquired cheap white dialed head only beater, but I'm not sure I'd have been willing to pay as much as $200 for it, had I actually seen it at the time. I wonder who bought it. :|

By strange coincidence, another black dialed Indianapolis 500 logo'd Orient J39701-70 rocked up on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, posted on 8th May by another Vietnamese dealer wristlabs.

Image

I only came across it yesterday evening, more by chance than anything. Rather like the previous 'head only' example, the reason I hadn't spotted it before was lack of any meaningful hashtags. (You can't search on text on Instagram.)

It's in fairly worn condition, but unlike the previous 'head only', this example is fitted with the original Orient p/n SA160 bracelet. I'd opine the head is itself is actually in poorer condition. Note the preposterous asking price of $450 !!

As stated in their Instagram post, it's also available in their webstore (the price there has since been reduced to $400).

The Vietnamese seller has also listed it (for a second time) on Reddit Watch Exchange 4 days ago. His almost Russian sounding Reddit user ID karlenko123 initially threw me a curve ball. His real name is evidently Nguyễn Hoàng Nhân.

The dozen or so photos attached to the Reddit post are the same as he used in his webstore listing but in a much larger size (1536x2048 pixels). In the interests of page loading times, I'm only going to include around half of them in this post. The remainder can be viewed full size in his linked Imgur photo gallery.

Apart from the scrapes on bezel insert, note the hefty ding in the middle of the 12 o'clock end of the watch case. :!:

I can remember swallowing hard when I had to bid 31,500 Yen to win the Yahoo Japan auction for my NOS example back in February 2020, then equivalent to approx $286.45 USD / £220.75 (plus Buyee fees, VAT etc.). Time and prices may have moved on, but $400 for this example ? I don't think so. I predict a few more Reddit re-posts and reductions yet.

I didn't see this coming, though. Earlier this morning, the evidently determined Vietnamese seller listed it on eBay.

The 11 listing photos are the same as he'd posted on Reddit / imgur, etc.. The description looks very similar too.

I've been mulling this over. With hindsight, it seemed just too much of a coincidence for two Orient J39701-70's with Indianapolis 500 logo'd black dials to have turned up in Viet Nam (albeit with 8 months between them). So I started comparing the photos. Ignoring the fresher-looking scrapes on the bezel insert between the '45' and '55' marks, both watches have matching small dings in their bezel inserts around '43' and under the '0' of '40'. Both have a fairly hefty dent in the middle of the 12 o'clock lug end, though it's less visible in Thong Pham's Instagram photos and video. Next I carefully compared the slipped tool marks on their case-backs and found more matches. Who needs serial numbers ? 8-)

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, I sent the eBay seller a message, asking the pertinent question. He duly replied:

Next obvious question: How did it change from being a 'head only' to having the correct p/n SA160 bracelet fitted. :?:

I hadn't checked my Instagram in a while, but when I did, I was surprised to find that I had a new unread message from thongpham_vintage_watch. :) There was no text - just half a dozen embedded photos. Obviously the same Indy 500 logo'd J39701-70, fitted with the correct original p/n SA160 bracelet, as sold to Nhân (a.k.a. eBay seller wristlabs).

Note that the 'additional' scuffing to the bezel insert, either side of '50', not shown in Pham's earlier photos (but shown in Nhân's) is more clearly visible in a couple of these. Definitely the same watch. ;)

Time for a long overdue interim update on that one ....
Seiko7A38 wrote: Tue Apr 13, 2021 10:29 am In case you might be wondering what had become of my recently acquired cheap beater Indy 500 logo'd J39701-70, that 'quick pit stop' turned into a lengthy trip to the garage workshops, where it's still languishing, awaiting my attention. Let's see.
As that 10 o'clock pusher had remained resolutely seized, I'd decided on the latter course of action. A suitable potential recipient case (and bracelet) donor eventually came up on eBay in the last week of June - in the form of a J39701-70 in decent used condition, listed by a Lebanese seller as a 7-day auction with an opening bid price of $1. Needless to say, I made sure of winning the auction.

Yesterday, I'd stripped down that Orient J39701-70 and given it a good much needed clean. This morning, before it got too warm, I re-assembled it with the white Indianapolis 500 dial logo'd movement that originally came in the 'head only'. Here's a slightly different wrist shot to the one I posted in the WRUW thread.

rsz_p1720078-crop.jpg
rsz_p1720078-crop.jpg (251.86 KiB) Viewed 10277 times

It's more evident in this closer shot, that apart from the discoloured hour baton's lume, this dial is far from pristine. :( There's some minor loss of paint from the rims of all three sub-dials. I was already aware of this - hence the reason I'd deliberately refrained from slotting the dial / movement into another J39701-70 case / bracelet (say one of my 3 NOS examples with black dials). I wanted to fit it into something in similar 'less than perfect' condition. This watch's average worn condition case and bracelet fitted the bill perfectly. Incidentally, the standard Orient logo'd black dial (with gold printing) / movement which I removed was in much better condition. It certainly won't go to waste and will be re-built into another watch in due course. ;)

There was obviously a subtle subliminal hint in Pham's Instagram message that I failed to spot. The same day, 5th July, Nhân had re-posted the Indianapolis 500 logo'd Orient J39701-70 on Instagram, as a 1-day auction. The caption began: 'Up for auction is a rare piece Orient Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway J39701-70' ....

Although they looked very similar, the 10 photos he'd uploaded to the post were in fact all new. The main difference being that the watch showed a date of MON 5, rather than Kanji 木 5 in his original set (and Kanji 木 27 in Pham's set). Here's half of them:

As can be seen in my screenshot of Nhân's instagram post, bid increments were $5 and he'd set a reserve price of $250, plus $20 shipping. I'd opine, given the worn condition of the watch, that was still optimistic, in view of the fact that in February 2020 I'd paid 31,500 Yen, equivalent to $287 for my NOS example. As I didn't actually see his post at the time, I can't know whether any bids were placed - it's quite possible that he's deleted posts. His final post on 6th July reads: 'No taker today', so if there were bids made, they fell short of the reserve.

So whether it's finally been sold off eBay - via Instagram, Reddit or Wristlabs webstore (none of which have been updated), your guess really is as good as mine. :|

I suspect that Indy 500 logo'd Orient J39701-70 didn't sell, because it's still 'doing the rounds' of the Vietnamese traders.
Wristlabs proprietor Nhân emigrated to the US last year, so presumably he must have sold it back to Thong Pham before he left Vietnam. By an amusing coincidence, Pham posted this single photo of it on Instagram, earlier this week, the day after I'd posted a couple of wrist shots of mine in the WRUW thread. There wasn't any suggestion that it was for sale. The brief Vietnamese caption translates as: Classic design of Seiko 7a38 series.

Sadly, since April last year, when Yahoo Japan decided to block Europe and UK, rather than comply with the latest GDPR privacy regulations, that's not quite as easy as it once was. I placed an opening bid (of only ¥20,000 Yen) on the first day, though based on my experience in February 2020, with the previous NOS black-dialed Indy 500 J39701-70, I wasn't expecting to win it for anything like that price. Surprisingly there was less interest this time (the listing only ever garnered 7 other watchers besides myself) and right up until 10 minutes before the auction was scheduled to end, I remained the sole bidder. Though I was ready for the snipers when they came, I had expected more of a fight. The listing was automatically extended by just 5 minutes and there were only 6 bids placed taking the winning bid price to ¥24,000 Yen - equivalent to approx. $183.55 USD / £150.00 GBP. :)

I was googling Orient J39701-70 this morning and came across a new image of a black dialed Indianapolis 500 version, which originated from the Indonesian classified site olx.co.id four days ago. It has some slight grazing on the bezel inlay, between '50' and '40', but it's not the same watch which was doing the rounds of the Vietnamese Instagram traders.

I'll admit, I almost gave up searching OLX, but I eventually managed to find the advert that it came from:

The asking price of 1,950,000 Indonesian Rupiah equates approximately to a very reasonable £105 GBP / $130.50 USD.
The reason I'm certain it's not the same watch, previously offered by the Vietnamese sellers, is because this example still has the protective film on the case-back (largely intact, albeit somewhat yellowed with age).

You maybe noticed that the OLX advert referenced the seller's Instagram store. He'd posted it on Instagram 4 weeks ago.

Reason I hadn't spotted it before is simply down to his random choice of hashtags.
