NOS Cartier Ferrari Formula CAL.531 incoming ....

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I've been a Ferrari fan (and sometimes dyed in the wool Tifosi) since the early 1960's, so it's natural to expect that my diverse 7A38 collection should include at least a 'few' of the Cartier Ferrari Formula CAL.531 variants. I bought my first in December 2009 in an auction on eBay Germany. It was a 'classic' black-ion coated, red-dialed 'TestaRossa', model # F6094801. I funded the purchase with the proceeds of the sale of my first 7A38-701B 'Vulcan' on eBay. I remember my excitement at collecting the package from the local DHL office on Christmas Eve, though I later realized it probably wasn't the best example I could have bought.

In the ensuing years, I've bought another 10 or so, including a better example of the F6094801, which is currently the only 'double' in my Ferrari Formula collection. Most models come in either stainless / two-tone or black ion coated, on either bracelets or leather straps; the later models have further variations in case / bezel and bracelet finishes, so there are umpteen permutations. There are at least a dozen basic dial variants. One of them has eluded me for nearly 15 years. It's the black dial with red sub-dial rings and the 'grille' motif also picked out in red. I first came across them in my searches on eBay Germany in early 2010. The earliest photos I saved were captioned 'Different Black Face'. Privately I've always thought of them as the 'Black TestaRossa'. In my searches over the next 3 years, I saw examples in stainless and black ion two-tones, fitted with both bracelets and leather straps. My favourite variant became the F.609.48.25.

I've saved dozens of photos of them from eBay listings, but never been tempted to take the plunge, usually because I deemed them 'too expensive'. This was a NOS example that was listed on eBay Italy in November 2021. I can't remember the asking price now, but I later regretted having passed on it and it became something of a 'grail' watch.

Like their humbler Seiko 7A38 siblings, prices of the Cartier Ferrari Formula CAL.531's have continued to increase, to the point where I almost gave up on the idea of sourcing a F6094825 for my collection. There was a used example listed on eBay Italy in March this year, with a ludicrous Buy-it-Now asking price of €1275 Euros (make that €1530 Euros with 20% VAT added). Needless to say it's still there unsold - item # 395299079708. That's another thing that annoys and frustrates me, the way eBay automatically adds 20% VAT at checkout, so it's almost impossible to avoid paying it. :x

You don't see anywhere near as many of these on eBay nowadays, so I was pleased to see a NOS example of F6094825, listed last weekend by an Italian seller as a 5-day auction. The problem for me was his opening bid price, €800 Euros.

I've only uploaded 8 of the seller's 18 photos. Couple of things I noticed were that the sweep second and 1/10s sub-dial hands were slightly off their marks - just enough to be annoying and that the gold-plated link sections of the bracelet appeared to be lightly tarnished. Note also the correct model # 6094825 on the cardboard sleeve. Below that is a price sticker showing £1050.000 (Italian Lira), equivalent to approx. €542 Euros. (Italy did not convert to the Euro till 2002.)

Apart from smatterings of English, like: 'New with Tags' and 'Never Used' the description was mostly in Italian, However I
was surprised to read this in small print below the main body of the description:

Either way, with or without 20% VAT added, the €800 Euro opening bid price was still too rich for my tastes. So when the auction was due to end, on Wednesday afternoon, around 15:26, I deliberately made sure I was nowhere near my PC, so I wouldn't be tempted. In fact I deliberately went and had a mid-afternoon nap !

When I woke up about 4:30 pm, I went downstairs and fired up my laptop. Quickly checking my eBay watching page, no one else had bid either (IIRC, there were half a dozen watchers besides myself), so fortunately the watch had remained unsold. The Italian seller had re-listed it as a Buy-it-Now for €800 Euros, with the option to make an offer. So after some deliberation, I decided to make him a lower offer. Not a 'lowball', but significantly lower. To my surprise. He accepted.

When it came to checkout, eBay did not automatically add 20% VAT to the total. :D However, shipping was supposed to be via DHL Express International and in my experience they will always invoice you for VAT, post delivery. I had to chase the seller for a tracking number. When he gave me it transpired he'd actually shipped it by UPS, not DHL. The UPS driver delivered the package on Friday morning (Yes, it was fast !) UPS usually require payment of VAT before handing over the package, but the driver didn't ask this time. So I'm not sure what to think at the moment. :|
