The elusive Racer J39 'Diver' variant - chasing unicorns ?

Post by Seiko7A38 »

I 'discovered' the existence of the RACER branded variants of Orient J39, produced for the Spanish market, somewhat belatedly, in August 2013, thanks initially to a 'heads up' from forum member Konkordski (Lawrence). I documented my voyage of discovery in The Spanish Inquisition thread, which ran for 7 pages. I'd been collecting the Orient J39's since February 2010, so it soon became evident that there was a lot of commonality between the Orient and Racer versions. Sometimes they share the same case model number, such as the J39002-70, J39908-70 and J39723-70, but more often than not the Racer branded version has a different model number.

Although these watches were likely made by Seiko on the same production lines as the 7A38, if documented anywhere, there's no public accessible information, other than the J3920 Technical Manual and a few lines on Boley.de's database.
In response to an email I sent in February 2010, Orient Watch Co. Ltd., acknowledged them, but stated they no longer had any records in hand.

As I decided I was going to try and collect them all, I created my own Excel spreadsheet database, to catalogue them. It's mentioned briefly here on this forum, here in a more detailed thread on the old forum, which includes links to a slightly outdated copy of the .pdf copy also in the archive.

I should be contented with what I've managed to amass to date, particularly my collection of the J39x01-70 'Diver' variants, in both Orient and Indianapolis 500 branded versions. I can almost fill a 24-slot case with just them alone.

That photo's now nearly 2 years old and I've bought a couple more since then. 8-)
But what frustrates the hell out of me is a 'gap' in that collection box - the elusive RACER branded variant !! :x

Back in August 2013, Lawrence had PM'd me a link to that YouTube video of a Racer TV advert, which included a tantalizing brief glimpse of it, between 8 and 9 seconds into the video. Literally, blink and you'll miss it.

But despite hours of searching eBay and the various Spanish classified sites I've still never seen hide nor hair of one. :(

Indeed, the fact that at least three Orient branded versions of J39x01-70 'Diver' had turned up for sale in Spain over the last few years, had led me to question whether the Racer version was ever actually produced. I was reminded of this earlier this week, when Spanish eBay seller scufutzz emailed me this photo of an Orient J39001-70, asking whether I was interested in buying it. I passed (based on the condition and that I really didn't need another grey dialed version).

So you may be wondering why I bothered to start this thread. :? Well maybe I'm a little bit closer, or at least leaning slightly more towards believing they might actually exist. I was browsing the Spanish classified site Todocoleccion this morning and spotted this listing for a magazine advert. The single photo isn't the best quality:

It's a RACER branded two-tone with a white dial, same as the J39xxx-70 in the TV advert. :)
