Rare Puma Y19904-50 listed on eBay Italy

Post by Seiko7A38 »

There's no doubt - in terms of sightings, the Puma Y19904-50 is one of the rarest non-Seiko 7A38 variants. Unlike the other Puma Y19x01-70 models, which pop up on eBay Germany with reasonable regularity, in my 15 years of collecting 7A38's, I've only ever seen one Puma Y19904-50. The three photos of it, below, were posted here on a Hungarian forum, by the then owner, 'Steve31', back in January 2013.

I wrote a thread about it on the old forum: 'Missing' Puma Y19 spotted by Hungarian 7A38 enthusiast !

Just quickly reading through it, Steve's Y19904-50 wasn't completely original. The person who'd sold him the watch had replaced the original JEPIC CORP. Y19 movement with an Orient J3920. I also found another old photo of a Y19904-50 that sold on Vatera.hu back in April 2012, though I don't think it's the same watch.

If you want to learn some background about the Orient / Puma connection, may I recommend also reading this thread:
The tacit Seiko 7A38 / Orient J3920 / Puma JEPIC Y19 connection

The Puma Y19's were all effectively re-branded Orient J39's, manufactured by Orient, but as dictated by the licencing agreements (shown in that thread), without any reference to Orient Watch Co. stamped on the movement or case-back.
The Puma Y19904-50 uses the same gold-plated metal-skinned resin watch case, with moulded external Tachymeter bezel, as the Orient J39911-50 and the Racer-branded J39907-50. Their dial layout with gold-ringed sub-dials is virtually identical (apart from the brand logos). The other major difference is that the Puma variants are fitted with movements whose back-plates are stamped JEPIC CORP. Y19 (rather than ORIENT J3920).

So without further ado, here's the Puma Y19904-50 that was listed yesterday afternoon by an Italian eBay seller.

Google translates the Italian seller's description as follows:
With reference Y19904-50
Very rare model, finding it new and never used is impossible

It features a prestigious quartz caliber with 15 jewels
Used by Seiko in the 7A38 model and also by other important houses

The case measures 37 mm in diameter, excluding crown
Screw back, day date at three and chronograph function
Beautiful flat bevelled mineral glass

The watch should be seen in person to understand the real conditions
My watchmaker has just replaced the battery, however he has made a scratch on the case "side and back".
It had never been opened and the opening itself was very complicated, absolutely irrelevant scratch, see photo
A new generic strap has also been fitted

The watch is working
So it was once N.O.S.. Pity that he entrusted it to a clumsy watchmaker to replace the battery, so now it's not quite so pristine. One might also ask the question what became of the original leather strap. One other point of interest is the white dial, but unusually paired with a black minute ring. I've never seen that combination before in any equivalent Orient or Racer versions. The red printing on the minute rings and sub-dials is common to both black and white dials.

So to the gotcher. Apart from the fact that he doesn't ship to UK, the Italian eBay seller is asking a typically greedy €380 Euros, with no option to make an offer. :o Time was, a few years ago, when I was in full on Pokemon mode (gotta catch 'em all), I might have got upset about it. Nowadays, stupid asking prices are the norm. Plus it's difficult to avoid paying 20% VAT on top of those prices, with eBay's automated checkout. Checking my records, the most I've ever paid for an equivalent Orient or Racer J39 was €165 Euros in March 2019 for my almost mint dark blue dialled Orient J39911-50.

So I won't be adding a Puma Y19904-50 to my collection anytime soon. :(

This deluded Italian eBay seller le24ore is evidently another of these chancers, like carm_en and only_time_watch, who think ending and immediately re-listing their over-priced items will snare a buyer. He's already re-listed it twice more since my earlier post. I'm not going to waste my time taking screen prints.

That re-listing was ended by the seller on Fri, 1 Mar at 10:52 AM because the item was allegedly no longer available.
He immediately re-listed it, in doing so, increasing the Buy-it-Now price from the previous €379.99 to €399.99 Euros. :o
