Seiko Chronograph sports 100 7A38

Post by Dancematt »

Inbetween sales times, i.e Jan sales and summers sales, i like to keep my watch buying a lot cheaper (its hard to give up completely after all) so in the spirit of this i thought it best to bolster my vintage/ discountinued collection. I chanced upon this seiko on the Austin Kaye website and after my night shift yesterday took the train up to see it, i bought it then came back - completely forgot to visit Jura watches to look at their selection of Fortis but still, i was tired.

Image

I must admit i love seikos. They are amazingly collectable and yet extremely durable and they have names (Spork, white knight, monster - its great is it not?) - not numbers! (i used to get a headache trying to figure out which 'C something' was which on here) and so they ooze character and fan appeal.

This one doesn't have a name so i'm going to call it the Porscha :) , on account of its almost homage like looks to IWC's stable mate brand. It was fantastic value for what is a NOS 7a38-703a and quite frankly they don't come any better than this anymore (the black pvd-like plating being a problem- it reminds me of the CWL coraxx stuff of yester-year).

Haven't been able to dig up much info but found this online:
The 7Axx series had 15 jewels (base the 7a38 had 17 and is the day date model) it has four stepper motors and all metal gears. This was the worlds first analog quartz chrono. It went into production in the early 80s and out of production before 1990. Its distinctive feature is the crown at 8 and calibration "pot" on the movement for calibrating the quartz movement, a feature not found on new quartz movements.

The 7axx series movements remain one of the best Quartz Chronographs ever mass produced

The watch features a Day date movement aswell as a 30 minute chronograph with an awesome 1/10 second display on the right hand side of the dial which wises around at one full rotation for every second (naturally).

Image

As far as i can find out, this model came in two versions - one with orange buttons and markers and one with yellow. I think this one may date to 84 and is just in incredible condition for a watch almost as old as me!

I think il keep it in the box to look NOS forever and will make a great friend for my RAF chrono (which will be getting a new crystal this week - update on that thread due soon).
I miss all the great things that may never be.

Very nice watch you have there. Not my style, but a very nice piece nonetheless. Tough to go wrong with a Seiko!

I quite like that.

What on earth is a "calibration pot" and how do you use it?
CW-C8 MKI
Steinhart Nav B-Chrono II
Citizen -"Orca" and 1976 chrono.
Seiko-"Spork", "Stargate II", "Blumo", 009 mod.
Zeno 300m army diver
Revue Thommen Airspeed chrono
Junkers Bauhaus.

The thing i like about Seiko is that the sheer size of the range means that there are always surprises around the corner waiting to be discovered. When you go abroad you tend to see models that you have not seen before.

Cheers,
Jack.

The colours work really well on that - looks great, well done!

(By the way - Laird - well done for mentioning Never Say Never Again, a v underrated Bond film!)

Hi, :D

It is one of my favourite Sean Connery James Bond films. (I know that a lot of people don't seem to like it. But I like its style and humour.)

One of my other favourites is, The Man With The Golden Gun, starring Roger Moore.

Though I do like most of the James Bond films. I like the films a lot more than the books! There is a lot more humour in the films. (Though there is some in the books.)

I have read all the original Ian Fleming books and some of the books by John Gardner and did enjoy them on the whole.

Till next time...

The Laird :D
Well man in the golden gun ain't bad i suppose.......im weird, i like Lazenby and Dalton although i feel Fassbender should really replace Craig in the next film- shame it won't happen.

Had to look up the 'Never say never' watch and even though it looks similar to mine, its not the same - i think it is a Porsche design with a aftermarket bracelet to be used as a laser?
